Poll function is broken, so let's rock this old school. A question in two parts:
1. Have you chosen a name that is classic (e.g. Elizabeth, Thomas), trendy (anything with an extra "y" or ending in -aiden), or currently popular (top 10 on SSA list)? Or Special Snowflake (please explain)?
2. How do you think your kid's name will stand the test of time?
Re: s/o names: classic vs. trendy vs. currently popular
As a "Jennifer", a name outside the top 20 list was a high priority. Not that I'm judging anyone who chooses a trendy name!
Went with the name Molly. Definitely an old/classic name, but doesnt feel old fashioned to me. When we told my grandfather he immediately said "oh there were a few Mollys in my highschool class" which was exactly what I wanted to hear. I wanted a name that didnt have any or many nickname options, was easy to say and spell. My first name is Beth - and always loved the simplicity and not having to answer questions about spelling, what I want to go by etc.
I think the name will stand the test of time...since its been around so long already!
Poop. I forgot the second part of the question.
Edit: I think it will stand the test of time. It's an old Gaelic name, so it has already.
We are going w/ Peter. Definitely a classic as well. (Its also a family name- my great grandpas.) We wanted something that would work as an adult in the professional world, someday.
I think it will stand the test of time too. It has for a while anyway.
Adalyn 9/28/2010 & Peter 4/1/2013
My girls are Abigayle Trinity, Abigayle is somewhat classic I think although the spelling is a bit "off" since my mn is Gayle I used my spelling. Trinity because she was named after my, my mom, and my grandmother (we all have T names) and this was a combo of all.
2nd is Victoria Elisabeth, very classic. Elisabeth spelled with a S b/c that is the way MIL spells her name.
This one if it is a boy will be Peter Theodore, again very classic . If it is a girl it may be baby girl or little sister, still a debate!
I hope they will stand the test of time. The names are already kind of classic and have been around for a long time so I don't think anything will change.
My daughter's name is Elizabeth - classic and popular (it was #10 on the SSA list the year she was born.)
We haven't chosen a name for New Baby yet. Mostly we just call her New Baby. I hope that doesn't stick.

DS is the 4th (his "legal" name is the 3rd the way it falls in line though) so he has a unique middle name but his first name is John.
If this one is a girl, her name will be Mary Rose. Boy is Steven Henry. Both are names after family members. Both are very traditional. I'm ok with others' kids having alternative names and/or spellings and/or pronunciations, but we like the more classic names.
I think because Mary was popular for like 4 decades in the early 1900s, it'll remain classic. Steven as well.

1. In my opinion, Cecily is a classic/old-fashioned name. It has not been in the top 1000 names on the SSA list in the past 13 years. I wanted something unusual, but still a "real name".
2. Since it isn't trendy, I think it will stand the test of time fairly well. I always try to consider whether the name would work on an adult in any profession. I wouldn't want to burden my kid with a name that is too cutesy for a professional adult.

There's a local meteorologist whose name is Cecily. I have this weird obsession with her. She's very perky, super skinny and has giant boobs. I follow her on Facebook. That's all...just wanted to share. Only other Cecily I "know."
We are going with Madeline Kara.
With Madeline, I wanted something classic, but not so dowdy/ old-fashioned that she would hate it in high school. DH wanted something that would be a cute nickname, he already calls her Maddie. And I wanted something common enough that people would know how to pronounce it and know she is a girl, but not so common that there would be a million others in her class as she gets older.
Classic.
James. Pretty much one of the most traditional names you can choose. It is my FIL's name. FIL raised DH as a single dad and is one of the very best men I've ever met, so that feels good, although to be honest, if it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't pick James. I don't DISLIKE it, it just doesn't do anything for me.
Since it goes back as far as the bible I'm pretty sure it will be around for a while!
2. I think it will stand the test of time. Good as a little girl name but won't sound silly as an adult.
Haha, this is awesome. I am pretty sure our Cecily will not end up like this, sadly.. we won't be passing on any super skinny or giant boobs genes. The only Cecily I "know" was a character on a Canadian TV show (Road to Avonlea) that everyone in my generation watched when we were kids.

We haven't picked a name yet, but both my girls' names are more on the classic side, so this LO's should be, too. I want to stay away from top 10 names because there were 4 Madame Ha's in my class at one point and it sucked.
2. How do you think your kid's name will stand the test of time?
Since we're going for more classic, traditional names, I don't think that's something we'll have to worry about./DED
Isla June
and
Halle Elizabeth
I think they'll stand the test of time now problem. Halle has been a name that's been around forever but just never really got all too popular. I think Isla will become more trendy in the next couple years but that doesn't bother me.
I think the names are somewhat girly and I can't picture a 40 year old Isla but then again my name is Jordan and I can't picture my name being all too fitting at age 40 either. "grandma Jordan" sounds odd lol
How are Isla and Halle pronounced?
We have chosen Lily which I feel is more trendy than classic, but I love the name. One thing, that I don't love however is that it's ranked #15 in the list of popular girls names. And Lillian is #22. I'm not positive yet on which we'll go with for her legal name, but we plan on calling her Lily.
ETA I also love the name Avery and it was actually my top choice, but when I saw that it was in the top 5 somewhere, I didn't want to use it anymore. (not that #15 is much better though, I know)
Tyler (10/29/08)
and Lily (4/21/13)
I love the name Isla. I wanted to name our little girl (we are having a little boy) Isla, but my niece on my husbands side is Lyla. Just too close!
If you love the name, don't let the SSA list discourage you. My daughter is Elizabeth, it was #10 the year she was born and I have yet to meet another Elizabeth her age. There is one other Elizabeth a year behind her in school. You might be better off using the SSA list for your state. It's not like it was when there were 5 Jennifers and 4 Michaels and 3 Kristins in each class.
Little Sister on the Way 04/23/2013
We haven't picked a name for this baby yet - ask me in April.
Overall, I think we lean toward classic, but not popular names.
DD is Mallory. A fairly classic last name, but more recently used as a girl's first name. I guess I'd have to say it's kind of a *special snowflake* name. It's not trendy or terribly popular, but yet it still seems like a "real" name. If she had been a boy, she'd likely have been a Wyatt, which kind of fits the same categories in my mind, although perhaps a bit more popular lately.
We are a bit mixed...and it depends on how you look at it...our girl names: Ruby Anne or Clover Elizabeth, seem to be one of each (Ruby a classic, Clover a granola name), but both are names of great-grandparents.
Our boy names are either Liam or Oliver, again, Liam is trendy, Oliver classic, but both come from family names generations back.
Question two is interesting for me. We haven't decided on official names, because we want to meet our baby before naming it. That being said, I am a firm believer that a name is a part of a person, so whatever name we choose, it will stand the test of time...at least, their lifetime.
2. I think it'll stand the test of time. It's not crazy unique or trendy, but also not very popular. I like that LO probably won't share a name with other girls in her class.
BFP #1: 5/10/12; 5/22/12: pregnancy deemed not viable (probably CP)
BFP #2: 8/2/12; Due date: 4/14/13, DD born 4/5/2013
BFP #3: 11/2/14, Due date: 7/7/15
Great choice!
I love it even more now than I did when I was younger.
We're Team Green, so we have two names. If it's a boy, Jones. If it's a girl, Brinley. I'd say Jones is sort of old-fashioned, classic, but very unique. That's one I believe will stand the test of time simply because it's been around forever (in America anyways). Brinley is definitely more on the trendy side, but I think it's ranked in like the 300's with popularity so hopefully it is still semi-unique. I think whatever happens, they will love their name because they were picked with such care by their older brother and sister.
My twins are named Eisley (girl) and Jake (boy, duh). Eisley isn't even on any of the baby name websites, still, so it is still a super unique name, which we love. Jake was like in the top ten when we named him that, but he was named after my grandpa so that wasn't really a consideration. I just hate how common a name it is, that he is usually one of three Jake's in his class. We wanted to avoid that this go round.
Isla is pronounced: Eye luh
Halle is pronounced: Hal ee. Like Halle Berry, NOT Hailey.
1. I think I am SS. I have chosen names that are classic but not contemporary. The names that I like were popular many decades ago so they were trendy at one point I suppose. I think my name style is "vintage."
2. Well, DD is named Hazel and DS will be named Dean. I think they are both solid names that will stand the test of time. I feel like they both already have!
Right on.
My style is kind of vintage/hippie with a touch of classic mixed in. Besides my daughters' names (Annie, Hazel, and Luna), I also like Lavender, Valentine, and Odette. I haven't thought much about boy names, since we would have used my late father's name if any of my LOs had been a boy, but the names I like are Rune, Noel, Phineas.
I think my girls' names will age well. None of them are time-stamped, and all were at least semi-popular 100 years ago. As a Brittney born in 1990, I wanted to stay far, far away from trendy names.
1. I'd say our choices fall into the "classic" category. We're going to go with either Genevieve (nn Eve/Evie) or Dorothea (nn Thea). I like that they are both names that you have heard before, but not names that you hear everyday, KWIM? Genevieve is slowly rising in popularity (232 on SSA list), and Dorothea hasn't even been in the top 1000 since 1970.
2. I think both names will age well and are suitable for both a child and an adult. Some people probably disagree with me on this, especially with Dorothea (they think of it as a "granny" name), but I don't!

Well, we haven't picked a name yet for this LO (or honestly, even come close to narrowing it down), but our style is more of the Classic/Traditional. DD1 is named Emma Charlotte. We weren't shooting for a popular name, but weren't going to automatically write off a Classic name just because it was currently popular (although it did give us a LONG pause b/c of its popularity). Surprisingly, I don't know any other little girls named Emma, and she's in a large DC center.
Unique (ie, made up names or made up spellings) are NMS.
