I realize we all have differing opinions on names, which is cool. But I was just wondering...is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of parents are making up names? Like...Kenlynn, Paislin, Brinley.......I just pulled those out of my head just now lol
Am I the only one who still likes feminine, classic names like Elizabeth, Victoria, Charlotte...?
Re: "made up" sounding names

Thank you! Now if we could only agree on a boys name. I love Elliott! Trying to convince my husband now! Haha, maybe I'll have him watch ET!
Yes the smoosh name or made up name thing is a trend right now. I hate it.

I like Elliott too, and when I brought it up, my husband's first response was "El-li-ott" in an E.T. voice....and then we realized the kid's initials would also be E.T. Is it bad that that actually makes me like it more?
ETA: OP, no, you're not alone. I can't stand made-up names, and there's a whole Baby Names board that (for the most part) agrees with you too.
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
Oh dear.
Often, I like "made up" names, but they are not my style.
Personally, my favorite boys names include James and Henry, and my favorite girls names include Teresa (Tess), Elena, Faye, Charlotte and Clare.
Of course all names were made up at some point, but yeah I can't stand the trendy, made up stuff that some poeple come up with. Like you said, everyone has different tastes, but anything that is two names together, anything with a lynn added to it, a random y shoved in there or adding an "ah" to something just sounds ridiculous to me.
But then again, I am also not a fan of using very OLD names and making them trendy. Some traditionally older names are beautiful IMO, like Sophia, Emma, etc. But a name like Gertrude or Beatrice, I will never see anything but a little old lady with blue hair.

I love Henry and Claire (I would spell it with the I).

Made up smooshed names hurt my soul. I prefer classics.
Some of the names I've seen make me feel really bad for the kid when they want to be taken seriously in a job search.
LFAF Summer 2016 Awards:
No, I like traditional names too.
I don't like the sound of smoosh names. I think part of the reason I dislike them so much is that I'm a horrible speller so they are making life rough on me by trying to be you-neek. :P
Made-up and 'unique spelling'. ::eye roll:: Gross.
I tried to post this earlier in the week, but the bump had an article about 'winter inspired names'. One was Branch. WTF
I enjoy classic names, but I also wanted a relatively unique name. We have one decided for a girl right now, I dont' feel it's entirely made up, but others might.
Maevis. I knew a girl long time ago named Maeve, and I always loved the name, but my husband wasn't completely on board. He thought about adding an "is" to the end, and viola. So it's kind of made up, but not like all the names now a days. those do bug me.

The youneek spellings get me too!
Madison? Fine
Madysyn? NO!
You can't just replace an e or an i with a y!
I try not to judge other peoples names too much, but Ryker sounds made up and I cringe whenever I hear it.
I'm going to have to disagree with you on this. It came out of no where in 2009, the first time it was ever on the SSA in 120 yrs of record keeping. It isn't listed on BTN. It is a smoosh of a popular prefix (Bryn/Brin) and a popular suffix (ley.)
I'm sure you are not the only one. Both of my daughters will have unique names. This LO's name could even be considered "made-up" I guess.
Why do you care what others name their children? If you like classic names, name your kid a classic name. I'm not going to judge you for it even though they are NMS.
ETA: And to PPs--the name we are naming LO is a combination of family names so it has a ton of meaning. Much more than if we found a name from a TV show or a book or something. And like another PP said, all names were "made-up" at some point.
Umm I love you for this reference.
You lose IQ points instantly when you name your child something "made-up". The random y's are one of the biggest offenders right now. And naming girls, obvious boy names, blech.
ETA: I agree somewhat about all names were made up at some point but when names do not follow proper grammer and you hesitate saying it because you're not sure if you can pronounce it correctly then it's just stupid. Someone on the baby name board posted the name Payzli the other day. I will judge someone for that because it's dumb.
That's Wilford Brimley.
I would totally name my son Riker--but that's because I'm a huge nerd and it's a Star Trek reference. Whenever I hear it, I only think of Star Trek.
Yes, you pick the name. But you** don't have to live with the name. You won't be the one putting that name on college and job applications.
Can you tell me you wouldn't judge/side-eye if you saw a Dr. Princess Smith in the phone book? Or Mrs. Emmaleelynn Adams running for president? Or Mr. Bentley Lewis as CEO?
Sometime we need to think past ourselves and realize this is a decision we're making for someone else, too.
**Don't mean you NCC, a general you.
This is my pet peeve too!!
My friend named her kids Asher and Willow which are a little of beat but still names IMO.
BUT spelled them:
Ashyr
Wyllow
WTH?!?! They were fine without the y's!!!
I just think it is rude that people are here making fun of names and using the word "hate" or "I would feel sorry for that kid." Um, wow.
Did you ever think that someone on this board has a unique name picked out? Even one that PPs have listed here? Maybe it is a name with a lot of special meaning to the parents. Maybe they have loved it for years.
Again, why the eff do you care??
But since everyone feels like being judgmental on this post today, I will say I don't like names like Elizabeth or Victoria or Charlotte. When I think of those names, I think of 80 year old grumpy ass women.
BUT, I don't have to name my kid that.
I'm a grumpy 33 year old... Does that count?
Honestly, everyone has a judgement about something in the world, and that something is going to have meaning to someone somewhere. "I hate xyz name", "how could anyone wear xyz", "people who spend xyz on that item", you could find any number of things to get your panties twisted. We just happen to be on names. Don't like what someone you don't know, whom you'll likely never meet, says about your potential baby name? Laugh or get off the Internet.
No one said anything about my baby names I have picked. I'm just saying in general, names are very personal choices to many parents. And people getting on here saying they hate a certain name is rude. People take naming their child as serious as whether they are going to BF or FF--people don't like it when that choice is judged either.
