baby not eating

Hi everyone,

DD has been having a lot of problems eating lately. She will nurse for five minutes or so, and then pull herself off the breast and start crying. Last night, she seemed pretty happy but still hungry after one breast, so I put her on the other side. After about five minutes, she pulled herself off and started crying. I was able to manually express some milk right away, so I doubt I was empty on that side. I switched her  back to the other side, but after a few seconds she started crying again. That time, when I tried to express, not much came out. I then attempted to give DD a bottle of breast milk, and she started crying at the bottle as well.

This has been going on on and off for the last few days. Once in awhile, when DD is super hungry, she will eat without a problem. However, most of the time, she will eat for a few minutes and then cry, no matter if I am nursing OR offering her a bottle of breast milk or formula (we supplement the twins). When I give her the breast, she has a very weak suck and won't suck at all unless I do compressions. When I give her a bottle, she acts like she doesn't know what to do with the nipple of the bottle, and it takes her awhile to close her mouth around it and drink.

Our pediatrician just saw DD two days ago at her two month checkup and said she looked great. We mentioned this problem to him, and he said to give it a couple days and call back if it kept up (he said that we could look into a few things, and that she could be coming down with a cold)...he didn't she any reason why she wouldn't be eating, though. I also called the lactation coach, and her only guess was that DD is getting a cold and to call the pediatrician if the behavior kept up. DD doesn't seem sick, so I'm not sure what is going on! I don't think my milk is drying up, because I am feeding DS without a problem, and he has a huge appetite.

Has anyone been through this? Any advice?

Thanks!

Re: baby not eating

  • When my boys act like this, it is usually due to air in the belly. Are you burping her when you switch breasts or every 5 minutes? My boys also self-weaned from the bottles. They slowly stopped taking them, and now they flat out refuse. Your DD could be doing the same.

  • Hi yinyang...thanks for taking the time to respond! I do sometimes try to burp DD in between sides, but typically give up quickly if I can't get a burp out of her right away. I will definitely try harder next time and see if that helps!

  • No problem, mama. Hope it works and LO starts eating better again.

  • What about reflux?

  • Definitely burp until you get something out. Otherwise, it might be worth asking about reflux.  Has your diet changed?

    What about reflux?

This was my thought as well. My true reflux baby doesn't do it, but my "silent" reflux one will. He rarely struggles with the breast,  but has episodes of bottle refusal. Our pedi recommended trying Zantac, but we are usually able to get him to eat with some creative positioning.

  • My babies have both gone through these types of fussy periods while eating.  At first I would try to find something to blame it on, but it never really seemed to make a difference.  Seems like it will last for a week or so and then work itself out without any real change in what I'm doing.  Maybe just stay the course and see if she comes back around?  Good luck!
