Multiples

Showers

FTM here. When did you have your shower/s? Where they during the "normal" late third trimester or did you move them up a bit or a lot? Where your multiples your first pregnancy, thus more likely your "big shower".

My mom and her friends have mentioned a shower but don't feel like they should throw one until the last month maybe two since thats when they are traditionally. I feel with multiples this would be rediculously late and honestly I couldn't even attend since I could travel the distance safely at that point. So why bother?

I guess my point how did your shower planning go?

Re: Showers

  • I believe that all the recommendations say by 28 weeks. I'm not a huge fan of second showers, but I think my moms friends are going to throw us one anyways. I'm shooting for around 26-27 weeks.

  • I've always heard by 28 weeks for twins. I'll probably do mine even earlier than that... maybe 22-24 weeks? But I'm high risk for preterm labor and it's more of a hanging out and celebrating thing for us since we have an older DS so we're asking for no gifts.
  • Mine was at 31w. I was actually pretty comfortable at mine, but I was crazy big and had so much trouble finding a dress that didn't look pornographic (the big chest, short skirt due to my stomach, and super tight fabric across the belly weren't doing much for me). However, I dropped the next day and that is when things started to get very uncomfortable. I would think you wouldn't want to wait any longer than 28-30w.

  • I wouldn't go past 30 weeks. Mine was at 28 weeks and was small because it was a "Sprinkle" but I definitely hit my "wall" around 30 weeks and would be exhausted traveling to a shower which actually my OB wouldn't let me and then going through everything.

I would definitely tell them you can't travel after a certain date and doing it early is recommended for multiple pregnancy because of possible bed rest and early delivery and it just gets tough at the end!!

  • I also think late 2nd tri is the time to do it. Mine was at 25 weeks, and it was my first and only shower so it was a pretty big group. I was tired afterwards but was able to enjoy the party. Looking back I know I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much (or at all) if I it had been much later. Also keep in mind that, as well as wanting to enjoy the shower, you'll want to have enough energy to unpack all your stuff, organize your nursery, make returns, wash clothes etc. etc. and if you wait too long you might be fine.....or you might be completely exhausted or on bedrest. With multiples, you just never know what's gonna happen.

  • I had mine around 26-27 weeks, and I had to travel four hours to get to it (my mom hosted it in my hometown). I tried to make it very early just in case, and as it turns out it was good I did! I was put on bed rest the week before the shower, and remained on it until I delivered at 37.5 weeks. I was able to attend my shower (I had to stick to the bed rest at my parents' house and stop frequently during the trip) but that was the last outing I had until the babies were born.

    Twins November 2012!

  • With my singleton, my shower was exactly 2 months before my due date so I was probably 31 weeks. I don't think having a shower for twins around 28 weeks is too early. I think your mom needs to understand that twin pregnancies are different and you can't necessarily do what's "traditional".

My family is throwing me a "sprinkle" for this pregnancy and I first said early April (2 months before due date) then said March would probably be better. This will be a small gathering of just family in someone's house but I still want to get it out of the way so I know what we have and what we still need to get to be ready for the babies.

Good luck. I hope your mom understands!

  • My original due date was end of May.

First shower with close friends was end of January.  Enjoyed gathering.

2nd shower with my family was mid-March and I felt horrible.  Was laying on couch whole time, swollen everywhere, couldn't breathe. did not enjoy shower.

Delivered babies about 2 weeks later in early April at 33 weeks unexpectedly.

3rd shower with hubby family was scheduled for the weekend that the babies were born (first Sat in April).  Shower cancelled and rescheduled to when babies were almost 3 months old.

Again, my original due date was not until end of May.

Schedule showers sooner rather than later.  Much sooner than normal. You never know what is going to happen with twins.

  • I had one at 27 weeks and one at 31 weeks. The one at 31 weeks was a little more tiring. I just made sure to sit most of the time. I was pretty swollen at that point, so it wasn't as enjoyable as the first.

  • I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that at 26 weeks I would probably be EXHAUSTED and have a tough time prepping my nursery/washing clothes and being happy about it.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's possible, but why wait?

I had my showers at 21 and 23 weeks - mostly due to needing to travel via plane to get to both, but I'm OVERJOYED that I had the foresight to push for early showers.

  • Mine was scheduled for 27.5 wks. I went into ptl at 27wks. I was released from the hospital to bed rest and had to cancel my shower.

  • I had mine at about 27 weeks, and even though it was a very small group, it was still pretty tiring.  I'm definitely glad it wasn't much later, because that gave me plenty of time to go buy the rest of the things we need and spend time getting the nursery set up.  Everything I heard said that showers for multiples should be done before the 30 week point!

  • With my first, I had my "big" shower at almost 36 weeks. It was too late. Not because I was exhausted or couldn't do the nursery but because I was uncomfortable. It probably wouldn't have been a big deal except that we have big families and I was opening gifts for close to two hours.

Like PP, I'm not a fan of second showers, but my mom and mil insisted and are throwing us a smaller shower, because it's twins, this weekend. I'll be 32 weeks. I don't see anything wrong with that timing. My sister said they were originally talking about the end of February and she put her foot down and said that was way too late.

I'm superstitious. I could never have a shower before I was in my third trimester. I would be way too worried about jinxing anything.

  • Mine was at 24 weeks. I had to fly home for it and my doctor didn't want me flying after 25 weeks.

If it were local I probably would have gone a little later, but I 'm in the minority and wasn't uncomfortable until 3536 weeks.

  • FTM and mine is this weekend (I'll be 27 weeks) if I don't end up on hospital bed rest before then. Definitely don't wait. Sh!t can hit the fan in a flash. Not to mention you'll be huge, tired, and uncomfortable by 30 weeks. Don't wait. Do it early. You're not "traditionally" pregnant :)

  • I had the last of my showers at 27w5d.  Four days later I was in the hospital getting steroid shots and then placed on bed rest.  Like PP said, sh!t hits the fan fast.  Schedule it for sooner rather than later.  I'm 32 weeks now and I'm so uncomfortable and huge and tired.

  • Definitely schedule it for sooner rather than later.  Mine was at 26 weeks and it was perfect.  I'm a prime example of "things can go wrong at any minute with a multiples pregnancy."  My water ruptured at 29w2d and I was admitted to hospital and put on bed rest until I delivered at 33w4d.

  • My work just threw one for me (22wks), but mostly b/c my boss is going on assignment for 3 months.  My family is the opposite and isn't able to come together until my 28th week!! That was the latest I would allow! TOO much after that time frame. Then again, I'm a planner. I can't wait that long knowing the increased possibility of early delivery! Good Luck!
