Over-40 parents...what we lack in vigor, we make up for with cunning.
Your flash setting is too strong on the camera.. Try turning more lights on in the room, or adjust the flash settings. If it's a point and shoot camera, try playing around with the "scene" settings. =] Or maybe use the red eye flash setting.
