Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Felt like the worst mom ever today

Tonight is our second night in our house, I didnt realize our door locks automatically when it closes and managed to lock myself out of the house with my son in his swing. I of course left my phone inside right next to my keys thankfully my neighbors are retired and let me use their phone to call a locksmith. I spent twenty minutes in the cold watching my 7 month old from our window praying he didnt need me. It was scary and I felt so stupid.

  • :( Our door does that too.  I'm super paranoid it's going to happen someday.

I'm glad it all worked out okay.

  • Oh man! That must have been so nerve racking :/ Glad both of you are just fine!
  • That must have been terrible, so sorry you had to go through that!!  I would have been so freaked out...we all make stupid mistakes, you are not a bad Mom. Hug to you.

  • Don't beat yourself up! Everyone makes a mistake now and then, and you learn from your mistakes. At least he was strapped in his swing and safe. One of the first outings I took my daughter on, I forgot her bottle. In an unfamiliar town, I had to drive around and look for a Target or Walmart while a hungry newborn screamed in the backseat. I felt like absolute dirt that day, but I haven't forgotten her bottle since! Chin up, tomorrow's a new day!

  • Time to keep a key under the mat!  If that's the worst thing you do as a parent you'll be golden.

  • I was babysitting once and left the little guy and my daughter inside while I ran outside to grab a bag of frozen breastmilk from the family's deep freezer, which was on the deck.  The little stinkers (just over a year old) locked me out!  My phone was inside, they were both screaming at the door, desperately wanting me to come back in.  Every window and door was locked.  Eventually (probably after about 15 minutes) I remembered being given the spare key once and noticing it was really cold...so, I chucked all of the food out of the freezer onto the deck and found their spare key under some frozen chicken.  I accidentally broke the seals on several of their freshly butchered chickens and I couldn't get all of the food back into the freezer!  Oh well, if I hadn't found the key, I would have broken a window so...
  • I wouldn't feel bad about it! Things like that happen and at least LO was somewhere safe! For future reference here is a cool idea I saw on Pinterest a while back. Not sure how to make it clicky so forgive my noob-ness.

  • Don't feel bad. Glad things worked out....for very similar reason I had my husband install a combination deadbolt on the door that goes into our garage/mudroom. I am horrible at remembering my keys if I leave the house and am not driving somewhere. I haven't had to carry a house key in over a year, and can never be locked out :)
  • So glad it all worked out and everyone was fine!  In all honesty, you'll probably look back on this day and laugh as you're telling your teenage child what happened when they were a baby!!

  • My DH had a similar incident.  He went out to start the truck bc it was 30 degrees that morning.  He gathered baby and diaper bag and headed out locking the door behind him.  Got to the truck and couldn't find his keys.  Truck is running and locked.  He had to wait in the garage 30 mins until his GM could bring the spare key, luckily there was a heater to keep LO warm.  As he was heading out his key apparently fell out of his pocket.  They were just inside the door jamb.

  • I locked DD#1 and my diaper bag in the car on a warm spring day.  I had to run back into Whole Foods and ask them to call the police.  It took 10+ minutes for a police cruiser with a slimjim to arrive. The entire time, she was screaming her head off.  Talk about a bad day.  I felt like the worst Mom ever.

But, she's just fine and I've lived to tell the tale.  You will too!
