I had my 16 week appointment yesterday, and my doctor says I haven't gained any weight since my previous appointment, putting me at only gaining 4 pounds. Any tips on what to eat to help put on some more pounds?? I feel like all I do is eat, but apparently it's not enough or I'm not eating the right things.
*edit* Does it help clarify if I say that I was classified as being underweight when I got pregnant? So my doc is wanting me to gain anywhere from 35 to 40 pounds, which I guess is more than normal. But honestly, I don't know ***, haha. It's obviously my first babe, so any help is appreciated.

I was just thinking this as well.
Well, in that case I agree more with PPs about protein, and maybe some ice cream after dinner. But don't make yourself too crazy this early on.
Why did you not ask your doctor about this? If your doctor didn't tell you to eat to gain weight or refer you to a nutritionist then that means that he is not worried about your weight gain. Don't create a problem when there is none.
To answer your question: Good fats. Whole milk, avocado, cheese. Peanut butter or other nut butters.
You could just gain weight later and that is how your body does it. I wouldn't push yourself to gain weight too quickly or before your body is ready. You will gain what you need to. The body is an amazing thing. As long as you aren't depriving yourself of calories or hydration. If you eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full then you should be fine.

Eggs, avocado, and nuts are all great ways to add calories and proper nutrition and are satisfying. Protein is really important right now. Also, make sure you are getting enough dairy - fat free milk is great and try to aim for 16 oz a day, it helps your bones stay strong and your baby's developing skeletal system! If your doctor isn't super concerned about your rate of weight gain, neither should you.
However, unlike the PP I would strongly urge you to avoid drinking too much regular soda and adding too much sugar (especially processed, high fructose stuff) to your diet. It's really not good for you or the baby. If you have a sweet tooth, Edy's Slow-Churned ice cream is great, and the occasional fat free hot chocolate is good too. Try to focus on adding in calories from "clean foods" ie - stuff that is minimally processed.
Eat a lot of carbs. Have peanut butter sandwiches. If you like cream cheese have a bagel loaded with cream cheese. Or eggs and hash browns. You don't necessarily have to eat more meals, just eat heavier meals.
Everyone is different. I'm not underweight (just slightly overweight since I didn't lose all my weight from DS), so not in the same situation, but I didn't gain ANY weight for months with my first pregnancy. It wasn't for lack of trying, either. I ate decently healthy, except for my choice of snacks. I was fairly active since I was a student and walked across campus and took the stairs a lot.
This pregnancy, I've only gained 4lbs at 21 weeks, but LO is the right size and everything looks good, as seen on the anatomy scan last week. When you have your anatomy scan, you'll see how LO is growing, and if there is a problem, they'll probably give you guidance on what to do about it.
Unless your doctor specifically recommended that you work on gaining weight, then don't worry about it. Eat healthy. Don't starve yourself, but don't stuff yourself. Indulge on occasion, but don't make it a habit - it's a hard habit to break! (Speaking from experience on that tip.)
I drank 2 Ensures a day but only for a week, only because I realized I wasn't gaining weight because I am coming into 2nd tri, which is when I started gaining appetite, always hungry and eating a lot. So I didn't need the supplement. I am now on track with my weight at 1lb. a week. this all happened at my 16 week too..
Maybe you are about to gain the weight. Good Luck!
