2nd Trimester

Help for weight gain!

I had my 16 week appointment yesterday, and my doctor says I haven't gained any weight since my previous appointment, putting me at only gaining 4 pounds. Any tips on what to eat to help put on some more pounds?? I feel like all I do is eat, but apparently it's not enough or I'm not eating the right things.

*edit* Does it help clarify if I say that I was classified as being underweight when I got pregnant? So my doc is wanting me to gain anywhere from 35 to 40 pounds, which I guess is more than normal. But honestly, I don't know ***, haha. It's obviously my first babe, so any help is appreciated. :)

  • Uhm, Maybe protein if you can stomach it? Eggs, peanut butter, etc?

  • Is your doctor actually concerned or just you? Because 4 pounds at 15 weeks isn't generally a problem.

  • She's just concerned that I haven't gained any weight since my last appointment, which was a month ago. She just said I need to try and gain like another 4 or 5 by my next visit, so I'm just looking for some tips!

  • I had only gained 5 lbs as of 20weeks but my OB wasn't concerned at all. At my 25wk appointment I ended up putting on 4lbs. I asked if it was a problem I hadn't gained much weight and my OB said no. That all the u/s looked great and baby's HB was healthy...

I was just thinking this as well.

  • Try drinking an Ensure every day.  They have nutrients and protein and calories so that should help.  My MW told me to do that because my appetite sucks, but I started out overweight so I don't want to put on the pounds so I haven't been listening ...

Well, in that case I agree more with PPs about protein, and maybe some ice cream after dinner. But don't make yourself too crazy this early on. :)

  • LOL! I have the total opposite problem as per my post recently. I am gaining too much already!  I can't stomach the texture of oranges with this pregnancy so I have been drinking straight OJ a couple of times a day. So maybe try drinking juice? I have 4-6 ounces of coke for dinner and about 10 bottles of water a day. Maybe drink some pop if you like it. I cut down to eating out just 1x per week and have Arbys, thinking it was healthier than pizza or burgers, its not working.  Oh girl, if only I had gained just 4 pounds by now, or even 10 I would be so happy...Crying

  • Why did you not ask your doctor about this? If your doctor didn't tell you to eat to gain weight or refer you to a nutritionist then that means that he is not worried about your weight gain. Don't create a problem when there is none.

To answer your question: Good fats. Whole milk, avocado, cheese. Peanut butter or other nut butters.

You could just gain weight later and that is how your body does it. I wouldn't push yourself to gain weight too quickly or before your body is ready. You will gain what you need to. The body is an amazing thing. As long as you aren't depriving yourself of calories or hydration. If you eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full then you should be fine.

  • Eggs, avocado, and nuts are all great ways to add calories and proper nutrition and are satisfying.  Protein is really important right now.  Also, make sure you are getting enough dairy - fat free milk is great and try to aim for 16 oz a day, it helps your bones stay strong and your baby's developing skeletal system! If your doctor isn't super concerned about your rate of weight gain, neither should you.

However, unlike the PP I would strongly urge you to avoid drinking too much regular soda and adding too much sugar (especially processed, high fructose stuff) to your diet.  It's really not good for you or the baby.  If you have a sweet tooth, Edy's Slow-Churned ice cream is great, and the occasional fat free hot chocolate is good too.   Try to focus on adding in calories from "clean foods" ie - stuff that is minimally processed.

  • I'd say up the healthy fats also, olive oil, nuts, etc, and full calorie veggie juices.  Add some lean protein like sirloin, tuna, shrimp, chicken breast, or lean ham.  If you eat a lot of salad or eat salad before your entree and it tends to fill you up, eat the entree first.  I'd recommend staying away from empty calories, since you're underweight, you probably do anyway, but once started, it's a hard habit to break.  Believe me.  GL

  • Totally jealous. I gained 5lbs at 16weeks and my doc old me not to gain any by my next appt. I'm small but I want a vbac and she says the less weight I gain the better it is for a vbac.
Eat a lot of carbs. Have peanut butter sandwiches. If you like cream cheese have a bagel loaded with cream cheese. Or eggs and hash browns. You don't necessarily have to eat more meals, just eat heavier meals.
  • Everyone is different. I'm not underweight (just slightly overweight since I didn't lose all my weight from DS), so not in the same situation, but I didn't gain ANY weight for months with my first pregnancy. It wasn't for lack of trying, either. I ate decently healthy, except for my choice of snacks. I was fairly active since I was a student and walked across campus and took the stairs a lot.

This pregnancy, I've only gained 4lbs at 21 weeks, but LO is the right size and everything looks good, as seen on the anatomy scan last week. When you have your anatomy scan, you'll see how LO is growing, and if there is a problem, they'll probably give you guidance on what to do about it.

Unless your doctor specifically recommended that you work on gaining weight, then don't worry about it. Eat healthy. Don't starve yourself, but don't stuff yourself. Indulge on occasion, but don't make it a habit - it's a hard habit to break!  (Speaking from experience on that tip.)

  • I drank 2 Ensures a day but only for a week, only because I realized I wasn't gaining weight because I am coming into 2nd tri, which is when I started gaining appetite, always hungry and eating a lot. So I didn't need the supplement. I am now on track with my weight at 1lb. a week. this all happened at my 16 week too..

Maybe you are about to gain the weight. Good Luck!
