Do I call the doctor about my babies?

So for the past week the girls with eat the first half of their bottles no problem, then the 2nd half they wimper, grunt, fuss, cry (you name it) while trying to eat. They both don't finish their 4oz bottle (that they were finishing 2 weeks ago). They leave anywhere from 1/2oz-2oz in the bottle. Then they scream non-stop after feeding. Swaddling has helped some but they are still uncomfortable. Not sure if it is colic related but it is all day and all night. Their bottles are made up of breast milk too by the way, they get formula for their 1-2 time a night feeding. And for that we use similac sensitive. We use Dr. Brown bottles. I guess I'm more concerned for them not eating their entire bottle and being so stiff and uncomfortable. And they still spit up some, or sound like they spit up but catch in in their mouth and make really dramatic gurgling/swallowing noises.

Sorry I kind of rambled but I'm tired and H and I feel like we are drowning. Any suggestions, hints, advice would be greatly appreciated! I am scheduling them with a chiropractor tomorrow also! It also doesn't help that Arilyn is only having bowel movements every 3/4 days...

Re: Do I call the doctor about my babies?

  • they could have an intolerance to something they are eating. whether it be the formula or breast-milk.   I would call the ped. and see what they say.

I had to stop nursing DD after 2wks for a dairy intolerance and she was put on Soy formula.  She is 3 now and still can not have dairy.

Not saying you have to stop nursing, but changing your diet will help.

Thanks for your reply. I rarely eat dairy, I have an intolerance to it and the aftermath of having dairy is not ideal! But while pregnant my intolerance goes away and my only craving was milk. Weird, I know. I bought colief to try but I want to talk to ped first. DD1 had colic but from 5pm-9pm. I will definitiely be calling tomorrow, I am dreading what tomorrow will be like without H around. Ahh want to cry just thinking about it! But thanks I will defnitiely bring up the dairy question to ped doc.

  • it could be more than dairy though.  when i was nursing DD i had to go off all cow products, milk, cheese, meat.  She nursed for 21 months and I make the worlds greatest bison burgers.  Now she is nuts for all things cow and dairy so i assume she grew out of it.

  • It sounds like reflux. My DD started doing the same thing recently. Shell arch her back and scream through her bottle. It's heartbreaking. I took her to the dr and they diagnosed her with silent reflux. She doesn't spit up much, but has all the other symptoms of reflux. We started her on Zantac and I can see a difference already. She still cries during some feedings, but less than before. I'm hoping once she's been on the medicine longer, it'll get even better.

I would definitely contact your dr. Hopefully he can do something to help them.

  • Definitely call your doctor.  Sounds like reflux.  All 3 of my boys were on zantac when they were babies until about 1 years old when they outgrew their dose and their symptoms disappeared.

  • I have experienced colic and food sensitivities with my older children.  I pumped for my first son and supplemented with formula.  He got colic at about 2-3 weeks old--soy formula really helped.   I exclusively nursed my youngest son, and he had tummy troubles and mucousy stools--I had to lay off dairy and nuts for the 15 months that he nursed.   I would talk to the ped. or a lac. consultant this week just to get a professional opinion.

  • I'm going with Reflux. Talk to you Pedi about it and he/she may want to start them on Zantac, and then at some point, Prevacid.

This sounds a lot like my girls. They would start out okay, but halfway through the bottle, they would start screaming, etc. They didn't really spit up too much, but that doesn't mean it's not Reflux.

Good luck and I hope you get it under control soon!

  • Could be Reflux, could be a reaction to the formula? I would still call your Ped reguardless to be sure. Better safe than sorry

  • Could be reflux or an allergy to the formula (DS has reflux and a soy protein allergy and DD has a cow's milk protein allergy...each had some of the symptoms your LO's have). I would call the pediatrician to check.

  • All day and all night sounds like reflux to me. All 3 of my kids suffered from it and it's not fun. DS was able to only ever be on Zantac. However, my girls needed prevacid AND zantac. We've been just on prevacid for about 3 months now, be they still need the meds.

Definitely call your doctor, Good luck!!

  • Definitely could be reflux, food intolerances, or both!  I would talk to the doctor about trying something like Zantac and possibly supplementing your Bfing with a hydolysate formula like Nutramigen or Alimentum, they are broken down into partial protein chains and most sensitive (MSPI) babies can tolerate them better than regular or "sensitive" formula.

I would also cut out all dairy (and possibly soy) for at least two weeks to see if that helps.  I know you said you don't eat much dairy as it is because it bothers your stomach, but you'd really be surprised how much dairy is in! You can even find it in spices!!  And unfortunately if your LOs are intolerant to dairy they can still react to hidden dairy like casein, whey, etc.
