Mothers of 2+ children... (nap time)

I have just started watching my nephew and I'm curious, how do you get one down to bed? What do you do with the other one? My nephew is 14 months and is walking so I obviously cannot just leave him unattended while I put DD down for her nap (I have to nurse her/rock her before she falls asleep - doesn't take long). Today my husband was able to watch my nephew for 10 mins while I put DD down, but I can't rely on that every time. We use the pack n play in the guest bedroom for him to sleep in. I'm tempted to put him in that (even though it's not his nap time and he will cry) while I put DD down for a nap, but then that means I have to carry both kids up a flight of stairs which is dangerous... so what do you do with the other child while you put one down to bed?

  • Can you get one of those fence gate things? Out some toys in there that he can play with and you won't have to worry about him walking away.

  • Not a mom of two kids but could you put one in a carrier while going up the stairs? Sorry I don't have to more advice.
  • Divide and conquer ::smiles::

    I get baby down and H gets Caleb down. It's extremely rare that we aren't both home at bedtime

  • This is nap time so throughout the day. My DH is working, so it's all on me. Today he just happened to be able to help me, but I can't rely on that every time.

    I feel like putting on the baby carrier each time will be a huge hassle and when I have a crying baby because she is too tired, a pain to do each time, so I'd rather find another way.

    I'd like to get those circle gate things but can't those tip over? If he pushed hard enough on one, couldn't it tip over? I'll look into this though! Thanks!

  • I have a really independent and well behaved 2 year old, so maybe it's different than a newly walking 14 month old.

    But I generally just tell him I have to put the baby down for a nap and leave him either with a snack, playing with his train set in his room or watching TV.

    How about in a high chair with a snack?

  • Ohhhh high chair! Good one! Can I leave him unattended while in a high chair? That kinda scares me....

    I also found this as an option maybe...

  • Once I had two kids I had to start doing all of my nursing/rocking downstairs. When the baby was asleep, I would carry her upstairs and lay her down in her crib. My other children were only alone for a few seconds. Now that LO is older, I nurse her downstairs and just bring her upstairs when she is tired.

  • Could you bring the play pen down stair for your nephew? I found that trying to put Cale down for a nap was impossible, and just an unneeded fight. I started putting him down for a nap on the couch, or in his play pen with a movie and he would stay quiet and either go to sleep or not. (I don't really force nap time as long as he just kinda hangs out and relaxes for an hour.) You could put him in the play pen so that he is contanted with some toys, or a movie while you put your DD down for a nap.

    It's just something you kinda have to figure out. You will get the hang of it. Now a days when I put Austin to bed, or even when I get Austin up in the morning I give Cale a bowl of food. Cereal, fruit, a snack, anything and turn on Tom and Jerry, Franklin, Mickey Mouse and then do what I need with Austin. It is the same with chorse I will direct him somewhere, give him is toys to play with and just go do  my thing. He is always right in the living room so I can always seem him or hear him, somedays he just helps me.
