I am going in for a c section soon and am wondering how long I have to wait to have sex. I'm assuming my vagina won't be hurting, so how do I know when it's okay to have sex?
You have to wait the same amount of time as a vaginal delivery. You will have just had major surgery! After a c-section you still bleed just like you had a baby "naturally". Wait and be cleared by a doctor at your 6 week check up. Just like you won't be enjoying sex you can't use a tampon either. From your placenta there is an open wound so if anything is stuck up there it can introduce bacteria.
I was told 6 weeks after my c-section because regardless of how you deliver you have an open wound in your uterus where the placenta was that makes you prone to infection. And I can say that I was up for sex after my VBAC long before I was ready after my c-section.
I was cleared for sex at 5 weeks pp with my csection. It hurt to some extent for almost a month. Plus, just so you are aware, my vagina hurt worse with my csection than my vbac, and a have a labial tear and n episiotomy.
When you doctor clears you! Not before, not maybe, but when you are cleared. You will have an internal incision and your cervix is still open. Semen or any outside stuff introduced by foriegn objects (this includes manparts) risks infection to your uterus, thus, getting the ok from your doctor is uber important. Please don't do it, recovery from c-sections are hard enough. Six weeks of abstinence will not kill you but a bad internal infection can or at least seriously damage you so you can never have more children..
6-8 weeks. I was told no baths (shower okay) also due to infection possiblility and getting up and down from bath. You probably won't want sex anyhow before that! What with the incision and bleeding vagina and newborn up every two hours to eat. I think we waited closer to 12 weeks when I had DS! I needed help putting on my pants and shoes for a good 6 weeks after my csection.
6 weeks, and I actually bled for almost 6 weeks pp which I was suprised bc I had a c section.... something nobody ever warned me about. But we waited till 7 weeks, between sleep and nursing I wasn't eager at 6
Thank goodness the women on this board know what they're talking about! I've seen posts on the c/s board saying that it's fine to have sex pretty much immediately afterwards because "nothing came out my vagina" or "I never dilated." Your uterus has a scar from where the placenta was, same as with a vaginal birth, plus a scar from the incision, both of which could become infected if bacteria get up there. And if lochia is coming out, your cervix is open and bacteria can get into your uterus. During my c/s, I asked the surgeon how exactly it worked since I never dilated, and he said during the section he would put pressure on my cervix to open it.
So - no tampons, no baths, no sex until your OB clears you, usually around 6 weeks.
