Thoughts on the Hawaiian male name Kainoa? It is pronounced Ky-no-ah like a smoosh of Kai and Noah.

I like it and it sounds great with our last name but neither of us have any Hawaiian ties so it would be a very out of nowhere name.

It's definitely NMS, and I kind of think it would be weird to use it if neither of you have ties to Hawaii. That's just me though.

I agree. I just thought it was an interesting name I have not heard before.

I like Hawaiian names and don't think you have to have and ties to use a Hawaiian name. Wasn't sure of this name but the more I say it the better I like it!

When I saw the name in the post subject line, I didn't think I liked it, but as I read your post and how to say it... I dunno... I kind of like it! My sister's middle name is Kai (now becoming a kind of popular boy name, but except for the last 3-5 years, I never heard it other than her middle name) and my parents have no Hawaiian ties. They just came across it, and liked it and its meaning.

I love Hawaiian names! And I love the name Kainoa.

We are definitely not Hawaiian, though, and I think it would be odd for our child to have a very Hawaiian name. Just like it would be odd for him or her to have a Korean or African name.

I like it. Before i was pregnant I loved the name Kalani for a girl. But all the grandkids in my family start with K so im trying to stay away from K's. If you love it go with it. I like it, its a little different but good.

My stepson has a Hawaiian name. DH and SS's biomom are not Hawaiian but he was born here. DH and I live in Hawaii. SS and his mom have moved to another state. He's 5 and already prefacing his name with "I was named that because I was born in Hawaii." I just think it's unusual enough that it'll be a constant topic and always questioned. I have friends who STILL cannot correctly pronounce his name. I personally wouldn't want that for my child. I've specifically said no Hawaiian names for our LO coming in July. Unless you are of Hawaiian descent, or plan to have LO live in Hawaii for most of his life, or don't care about the constant questioning. I wouldn't use it. Also, living here, I just think it's one of those cultures that you shouldn't really use the name unless you have ties. There are some exceptions, like those that have gone mainstream, like Kai mentioned by a PP above.
