Sorta BR - laundry sorting?

I am just curious what other people do. I feel like I'm making this more complicated than it needs to be. I currently wash all of these separately:

1. sheets

2. towels

3. cleaning rags

4. whites/lights regular (t-shirts, socks, etc.)

5. darks regular (t-shirts, jeans, etc.)

6. gentle cycle lights (undies, washable sweaters, etc.)

7. gentle cycle darks (undies, washable sweaters, etc.)

8. Dryell (home dry-clean)

9. baby clothes - gentle

10. baby linens (hooded towels, burp cloths, bibs, waterproof pads, etc.)

And I feel like I need an 11th cycle to separate the baby clothes into lights and darks. I have just been washing on cold and using one or two Shout color catchers to prevent color bleeding, but I think his white clothes might be looking a bit dingy.

10 or 11 different kinds of loads for one little family of 3 just seems excessive. And I'm even considering cloth diapers, but I just don't know whether I can handle more laundry.

Just curious what you do. Anyone just washing their baby and adult clothes together? It's just...washing DH's boxers and baby's onesies together seems less than ideal. ;)

Re: Sorta BR - laundry sorting?

  • I don't sort that much.  I do wash sheets separate. DH washes his clothes separate from mine.  I wash mine with DDs if I don't have enough for just a load of hers.  Other than that I don't sort by color (unless it's a red that has never been washed).

  • I wash baby clothes with my clothes, but not DH's because he works in a warehouse and gets really dirty at least once a week.
  • oops, fussy baby calls. I'll be back later, appreciate the replies!

  • I wash everything on gentle cyle and cold so I can combine loads.

Sheets and Towels get washed together (including baby stuff).

Then, I just do a load of darks, and a load of whites/brights.  I use color safe bleach every so often on the whites/brights.

Baby clothes are washed all together in one load. I haven't had an issues with dingy clothes, but then again, we have mostly pink/white/light clothes as it is.

    Cloth diapers get washed seperatley.

I do not wash until I have a full load.  With baby clothes, that means a load every week or so.  I was our towels once a week (we have enough clean ones to last) and sheets once a week.

My clothes get washed once a week as well. I rewear jeans or sweats and sweaters.  The only things that have automatic trips to the laundry basket are socks, undies, and tank tops.

So, 4 loads total for clothing, towels, sheets and then CD loads, which is 2-3 per week.

Even with my CD, I still have 4 less washes a week than you do.

  • i wash sheets together (baby and ours)

towels & wash clothes together (again, baby and ours)

i separate baby clothes based on the tags, hot and cold.  if it's a small load of hot, i'll throw in some of our undergarments and wash the whole thing on delicate.

our clothes just get thrown in the wash depending on what we need to wear that week.  i only really sort the baby's clothes.

  • Wow.  That's a lot of laundry.  I combine my towels and cleaning rags, and don't do a gentle cycle, but I wash all clothes in cold water.  I do kid laundry seperate from adults because it's easier to fold/put away that way.  A lot of clothes are air-dried, so I do fewer dryer cycles than I do wash cycles.

  • I sort like this:

    darks

    lights

    towels

    sheets

    DH's work clothes (army uniforms)

I don't separate baby stuff from our stuff. I just toss her socks in a lingerie bag so they don't get lost in the wash.

  • I wash DD's clothes separately, but that's only because it's easier to sort that way.. I do all her clothes darks/lights in one load on cold, towels and sheets included.

I separate DH's and my darks and whites but throw delicates and whatever in w/ those and then just wash the entire load on delicate/hand wash if needed.

Towels get washed seperately with cleaning rags in hot water.

I have no problem mixing any of those, i.e. DD's clothes with ours or towels w/ sheets, etc.. if a load needs to be done and I don't have enough for a full load. The only thing I don't mix are cleaning rags w/ anything but towels and not w/ DD's towels.

  • WOW!  That's alot!

    1. Baby clothes/sheets/towels warm/gentle 1x/1.5-2 weeks

    2. Towels+white socks+our sheets+hand towels- 1/week

    3.  Our clothes- usually I separate darks/lights and do 1/week, but sometimes I'll throw it all in one load on cold.

    4.  DH takes his work clothes to the dry cleaner- I told him before I moved in with him that I'd do his laundry but no ironing.
