Babies: 6 - 9 Months

puffs & finger foods

DD is 6 months.

we tired puffs the other day and she kind of gagged on it- I am pretty sure she just isn't used to the texture or having to mash with her gums.

I worry so much about her choking! :(

What age is appropriate for finger foods and puffs?

Re: puffs & finger foods

  • Gagging is actually helpful, developmentally.  The gagging is what tells them "Hey slow down or you've got too much in here."  Infant gag reflexes are much closer to the front of the tongue than for you and I so gagging doesn't mean they're in imminent danger of choking.

  • good to know!

I notice she does it with thinker consistency foods I puree- like sweet potatoes.

I guess she really couldn't choke on a puff, but it's scary non the less!

Perhaps I will try again and see.

    Thank you!

  • when our LO first tried puffs I broke them up and fed them to her until she got the hang of it and then gave her bigger pieces.
