Parenting after a Loss

First u/s and all day sickness question

Good morning ladies! First u/s was this morning and all looked good. LO measured spot on for dates, heart was ticking away, so two thumbs up there and one of what will hopefully be many sighs of relief over the next 32 weeks ::eek that seems like a long time::

A question for you as well my evening nausea which I also had in my pregnancy with DS has turned into all day nausea since Saturday. It makes working and getting things done a bit of a challenge. Did anyone have luck with ginger or other tricks to help?

Thanks for any ideas.

Re: First u/s and all day sickness question

  • Congrats on a great scan! I had much more sickness this time around. Unisom and B6 before bed helped and so did Zofran. GL!

  • Eating consistantly always helped me ward of the nausea as did ginger ale.

So glad everything went well this morning! Congrats!

  • Congrats on a great u/s!  I was blessed with all day sickness from 6 weeks until the day I delivered.  After many failed attempts at natural and rx remedies, the only thing that worked for me was 1 unisom tablet every night.

  • Thanks for the well wishes and advice re: Unisom, ladies.  I am taking extra B6 already so maybe the combo will help.  I'm also going to seek out some fresh ginger and see if that helps.  It is hard to run meetings, have prolonged conference calls, etc. when I feel like I am going to hurl!  Ick!

  • Congrats on the great u/s! I didn't find any over the counter remedies that worked for me. I resisted the zofran for a long time, and then learned I was silly to do so. The melt in your mouth zofran tablet works fast and works well. GL!

And bonus--I've been so uncomfortable since early on that the Unisom helps me fall asleep.  The hip pain that haunted me in 3rd Tri with DD came back in early 1st Tri with this one :/

  • YAY for a great scan!

Ginger Tea (Yogi brand) helped some.  I had to brew it weak, which is weird as I usually go the other way on tea and coffee.  Though, really, not much helped other than trying to keep something in my stomach at all times.  I had a heck of a time eating for quite a while.  I did find the foods that I could usually eat and kept those around.  I remember many times of talking myself into eating an entire yogurt serving, when I'd stopped about a third of the way through.  It often took me an hour to eat even little things.  M/S sucks.

Also, remember to vary your drinks if you're having trouble getting them down.  Some days super cold water was great.  Others, it was awful.  Same goes for hot water, herbal tea, fizzy water, etc...  I just kept trying new combinations and hoping one worked.

ETA: If you think you're going to hurl when you're where there's nothing to hurl into, carry gallon sized Ziplock bags.  If you open them and flip the tops out (basically flip the top down over the sides a bit so they stay open), you can hurl into them, flip the tops back down and then seal them.  Flipping them out first does triple duty - it holds it open, keeps the zipper part clean so it seals easily and gives you a spot to tuck your hands under both for protection and for holding.  Plus, you can seal and throw away the bag with little to no mess and a lot less stink.  I find the kind that seal like a real zipper are easier for sealing when you have nasty stuff inside.

OMG Karen, you should write a book on this. Seriously. Thanks for the great tips (and I have yet to actually puke - something to look forward to I guess :)

  • Congrats on the great u/s!  I don't really have any advice on the nausea.  I had a decent amount with my first pregnancy and never really found anything that was all that successful in helping.

  • YAY!!!!! Congrats on a great scan!

I had horrible all day sickness for months and nothing seemed to help, so I've got no advice.  I just used to remind myself of how healthy the baby must be to be making me so sick!

I hope you get some relief soon!
