Baby Showers

Small party ideas (NBSR)

I love this board so I am posting this here.

One of the teacher's in DS's preschool is moving away. We are sad about this! Anyway, I would like to throw her a small going away party on a very tight budget.

My thoughts are balloons in the school colors, a veggie with pasta salad, and a sheet cake (or cupcakes maybe?)

I just brought it up to the head of school and she is all for light refreshments and snacks. No meat- so all must be veggie friendly diet.

The showers and birthday parties I have thrown for DS have been themed and slightly over the top, so this will be a nice change as a low key party :)

Do you have any?

I think cake and punch would be plenty for food, and with the leftover money and maybe some people could chip in for a small going away gift for her, or flowers?

This!  Costco has very inexpensive sheet cakes.  On the other hand, cupcakes are much easier to serve and you wouldn't need plates, forks, etc.  I think it would be nice if you have a little left over to get some type of gift- maybe the autograph picture frames and take a big group picture during the party?  Or something personalized from the kids.

  • Balloons are cheap enough but I wouldn't go overboard.  Also, as the other pp said if you just went with cupcakes (no other food) you would not need plates or forks (just napkins and cups for a beverage).  If you really want a veggie pasta salad I would probably get some small rolls to go along with it...crackers might even work.  If you go with the pasta salad you'll need forks anyway so go ahead and have the sheet cake (best price is Sam's or Costco) and pick up some small paper plates at the dollar store.

BTW...I think a frame to hold a thumb (or 1 finger) print of each child (with their name printed/typed underneath) would be a cute going away gift.  If the frame is big enough you could even include a picture and put the thumb/finger prints around it.

  • Thank you, I esp love the gift ideas! I will have to coordinate with the other teachers to help out with that. I think they will be glad to do it.

Can you get sheet cake at Costco or Sam's if you don't have a membership?

Not usually. But Sams is owned by Walmart or vice versa and pricing is not much different TBH. For DDs birthday cupcakes were 50cents to a dollar more per dozen at Walmart. It wasn't worth the savings to me to put MIL in charge of cupcakes from SAMs with her membership.

Nope- not at Costco either, sorry :-(  If you don't have a Walmart like PP suggested, maybe baking cupcakes would be an economical solution?  Most places charge an arm and a leg for them.  If you line them up in rows, you could still write across them with frosting or get sugar letters or the little push-in tooth pick flags with "farewell" etc.

I love this idea. But I love thumbprint trees. I found this (sorry, can't make it clicky on my iPad). I've also seen it done with cars, bicycles, a house, or as raindrops 'falling' around an umbrella.
