Hypnobirthing help!

So when I had DS I took no classes and read no books on labor because my plan was to get an epidural! Well I ended up being induced with cytotec, a foley balloon, breaking my water AND pitocin. So basically I had a terrible labor with never ending contractions. And lucky me, the epidural FAILED! Call me naive but I didn't even know it could potentially not work!
So with this labor I want to have other ways of handling labor so I'm not in immense pain for 24 hours straight. I was looking into hypnobirthing but the couple of classes I found are 350 in my area!
How do I find classes? I've found 2 instructors within like 45 miles of me which seems weird. I would expect to find more. I live in the SF Bay Area.
Also, does 350 sound right for price?

Re: Hypnobirthing help!

  • Unfortunately, that seems about right.  I live in Orange County (so another pretty expensive CA location) and when I priced it out it was anywhere from $350-500.  I only found two instructors who were currently teaching classes as well.  I contacted five that I found on the Hypnobabies website and only two have upcoming classes.  It was pretty frustrating.  I ended up going with a Bradley class (still $300 but it's 12 classes vs 6 so I feel like it's a little better value, plus it just worked better for our schedule).

  • That price does sound about right. Our class is around that much.

Some hospitals now even offer the classes - here at UCLA they offer them. I would look into hospitals as well as private providers. FWIW, I did lots of research, and decided that Hypnobabies seemed like a more comprehensive course than Hypnobirthing. If you have one of those classes nearby, might also be worth looking into.

  • caffrin- I am also in the bay area (San Jose area) and have found some classes down here.  $350 looks to be about the average price.  Have you checked out Harmony in Campbell?

It's even that much, 350 plus in Denver. You can order the tapes etc off Amazon for around 180.

I didn't even realize they sold the CD's. Maybe that's my best bet. Thank you!
