Since the board is slow and I'm beyond bored at work, I thought I would post this pic and article for discussion. A waitress at an Applebee's posted the picture below of a charge slip from a customer who happened to be a pastor. The pastor found out she posted it and complained to Applebee's who fired the waitress. The link to the article is below (sorry it's not clicky):

what an asshat (the pastor)
Waitresses don't even make minimum wage at most places, they make like $2.00 an hour which then equals a $0 paycheck after taxes. They live on gratuity. And almost every restaurant in the country has a 6+ party of more additional gratuity added on, because 6+ parties are Pains in the Asses. Good for her for calling her cheap ass out.
And shame on Applebee's for firing her.
And yes, this needed continual use of the word ass in it. TB doesn't consider it a swear word.

She didn't give any gratuity at all. She scratched out the automatic 18% and wrote in zero (or were you just referring to tipping in general?)
Her behavior was appalling. She was only upset because it made her look bad, she didn't care about the waitress loosing her job- not very Christian-like IMO, certainly not appropriate for a leader in the church.
My thoughts? Everyone should work in the service industry at least once. It kills me how rude people are to waitresses.
Way to use your religion to justify your (ignorant) actions.
For one, it's not like the waitress wrote the 18 percent gratuity on there. The company does. For another, the pastor had to know that the waitresses, management, and bookkeeping would see this receipt.
If you are going to write something snarky, while not tipping your waitress, you.deserve to get.called out on it.
Boooo on applebees for firing her!

This!
I feel bad for the waitress because I get she was just venting. She should have taken a little more care to eliminate any information that could link back to the customer (from what I understand, the image has since been cropped and altered but originally it was the entire receipt that was shown).
The pastor needs to realize the concept of Christian charity. Also, if I was one of the people dining with him, I would be horrified (and probably would have covered his tip just so the poor girl still made her $$).
Applebee's sucks for firing her. I'm sure someone will come out of the woodwork and support her actions by either giving her another job or moolah.
The person that posted the picture wasn't even the waitress that served the pastor.
The pastor's behavior is inexcusable. And it doesn't even make sense. To tithe is to give 10% of all your earnings. 18% of a $35 check is much, much less. Sounds like she is one of those non-tippers and her panties got bunched up because it was automatically included.
But Applebees had no choice but to fire the waitress that posted the receipt. A local restaurant here had Peyton Manning as a customer and he left the waiter a $200 tip. The waiter posted the receipt online to show it off. He was canned too. Restaurants just can't have people thinking that they will tolerate their receipts being posted online by staff.
My initial reply "well if you don't give me 18% then I can't give God MY 10%, tips are my salary". (just to make the pastor feel like a pile of crap)
Not that the waitress has to believe in God, or anything like that (no one can tell you what to do with your money), but I find it very short sighted of the pastor not to realize that what she leaves as a tips is the waitress' salary. The pastor gets a salary, and the parishioners don't get to tell her how much she is going to make,or what she does with it, why would she ever try to dictate what someone else does with their money?
I agree completely. The pastor deserves to be publically humiliated.
So, why hasn't the Pastor been fired? She certainly isn't doing her "job". I think a ton of servers in the STL area should go to her church on Sunday and when they pass the hat, instead of tithing, leave notes to the pastor about how they were going to give money but didn't agree with the sermon so instead she gets a piece of paper.
This!
Also, isn't it only automatically included if the party is over a specific number of people? And isn't that information usually printed on the menu so that you are aware? I would be curious how many people were in the party and how hard the waitress had to work to serve all of them (which I can't imagine is easy when its a large group of people, which is why the tip is usually automatically added).
The article said there were at least 8 people in the pastor's party which is why the 18% gratuity was added. And yes it's usually included in the menu.

The only remotely positive thing about this I can find is that if it was a party of 8, it seems like the check was somehow divided up if the pastor's portion was only $34-$35, unless they were all having coffee or something. I say it's positive, only in the sense that the waitress hopefully only got stiffed on a portion of her tip, and not the tip for that entire party.

I think that is a huge generalization.
So they should just work for free??? Tips aren't an "entitlement", it's how they make their wages and it is the industry standard in this country. Minimum wages laws DO NOT apply to the restaurant industry. You go out to eat and you factor in the cost of the tip. That's just what's done here.
And yeah, it's not the only job out there, but it is actually a hard job, and it does require a certain level of skill sets and experience. And in a true democratic fashion, it's actually one of the few jobs where doing a GOOD JOB is rewarded by higher tips.
I waitressed my way through high school and college, and when I went an got and office job, it took me years to actually make the same amount of money again. And that's with a degree from a very very reputable institution, and a second degree in the very specific industry I'm in.

I agree! You're talking about people who make less than $3.00 hourly. While there are of course poor servers out there, a large majority are hard working people who are good at their jobs! They work hard to make a decent hourly wage and coming from someone who served for many, many years if you think servers have a false sense of entitlement then you have probably never worked in a restaurant and experienced what these workers do in an average shift. It's far more than dropping cokes off at your table!

I worked as a waitress all through college and frequently got a little religious card accompanied with a crappy tip.
What this girl did was stupid and reckless. Of course, every server would love to do something like this. It's our dream. But it's a bad idea.
I'm happy the pastor got so much celebrity for being such an a $$ hole, but Applebees was probably right in firing her. Hopefully she can get a job someplace elese.

Although I think that's a silly thing to write on a receipt, she should not have posted it on the internet, or allowed her coworker to post it, if she valued her job.
And if we are getting into levels of "Christianity," it also wasn't Christian of the waiters to publicly humiliate someone else, even if the pastor was being a jerk.
Firing her may have been harsh...but at the same time people have been fired for less, especially when the internet is involved. A business can't have employees posting receipts and making fun of customers, even if the customer deserves it to some extent.
And to top it off, who knows what kind of service was given. Perhaps exemplary, but we don't know. I have worked in service too, and part of the job is learning to gracefully deal with the public.
It is. I could edit it to say some, or in this case, strictly the OPs waitress, but for the sake of conversation, I'm just going to generalize.
Blah blah blah, don't care. Working most jobs suck. Working most jobs require a skill set. They accepted the job knowing the wages. Andplusso, even in states where the federal minimum wage is 3 bucks, if the waitress isn't making the remaining 4-5 bucks In tips hourly, the place does have to cover the remaining so they make minimum state wages. There are also several states where they make state wages of 7-9 and hour, not federal, and still expect gratuity for doing their job.
A tip is gratuity. Gratuity is not an entitlement.
Well then I suppose I could generalize and assume that all pastors are cheap and degrading.
Touche
Wow, this is the most ignorant thing I've read in quite some time! Congrats.
I read in a different article that the pastor asked for separate checks in order to avoid the automatic 18% gratuity... then turned around and asked the waitress to charge each, separate order on her credit card.

As a restaurant manager and former server there are so many things I can say about this. Is it every servers dream to do this to someone? I think absolutely. Did she deserve to be fired? Yes. She posted personal information including a customers credit card on the Internet.
Also while I think people who decide not to tip or tip poorly are typically cuntariffic and usually the biggest pains in the asses the truth is if you are a good server, you will make it up with better tips from decent people.
Our favorite thing to do when someone leaves a crappy tip in cash is to bring them the change and say " here you must need this more than I do."

Patiently waiting for little brother!
That was just the pastor's portion of the bill. They split it up.
The pastor asked for separate checks. (assumingly to avoid the 18% gratuity.) That one $34 tab was one of several, separate checks.

You should get out more.
Wow, you're a self entitled ass. You must be a pastor. I hope the servers spit in your food.
And I laugh at the idea that the restaurants are "making up the wages". You obviously have never worked in the industry.
