Making Baby Food

I used the old beaba to my DS baby food but I wore it out and need something new. I know I want a machine that steams and puree's .... Anything new out there that is better than the beaba?

I made all of DS' purees, and I'm so glad I never wasted the money on a special baby food maker.

I used a pot, steamer insert (or roasted on a sheet pan in the oven) and an immersion blender.

Me too.  I steamed or baked the food, pureed it in the food processor and froze it in ice cube trays. Easy peasy and much cheaper.

  • I've always had success just using a steamer and a mini-food processor.

This exactly. My mom started doing this first for DS (she watches him during the day) and I started shortly after. So thankful I did it. So convenient and no extra kitchen appliances sitting around.

Has anybody ever used the baby bullet? I'm thinking about registering for it because I want to make our baby food, and I like the idea of the containers they sell with it, but I'm not sure if it is good or not, or just a waste of money.
It's a waste of money.  The containers are super tiny and expensive.

  • I agree. I got the baby bullet as a gift and made all of DSs food with it but the same could be done with a food processor or a blender. The containers are tiny and the six pack one is hard to use. I suggest asking a friend who isn't making their own food to save the little plastic gerber containers for you or get a bunch of ice cube trays and some plastic bags.

I love mine.  It's not something I would have purchased, but  I got it as a gift and use it a ton.  I use it for my power smoothies in the morning, too.

  • I just used a steamer basket, baking sheet, and food processor. I did have little food containers from BRU and found them to be handy for easily transporting food, but it wasn't necessary. The ice cube tray and freezer bag method works just as well.

Yup, this. I pureed mine in my blender, adding milk/formula or water if needed.

I would think you could just get the regular Magic Bullet, and then it would get more use after baby.

We did BLW with DD2 and will do it again this time.

  • We have and will be using our Thermomix. They aren't cheap, at all, but it was the single kitchen appliance we wanted, and now own--it does it all! I don't recommend it for baby food, alone, but it is the best kitchen gadget we own!

This exactly. Immersion blenders rock. Use it now for soups, making whip cream, etc...

I froze the baby food in the OXO Tots containers. Loved them because I could grab one quickly from the freezer and take it with me.
