Teen Mom Denied Rights to Breastfeed

Hi Ladies

I thought you would be interested in this.

A teen mom who attends her local public high school is not being allowed time to pump her breast milk.  This is a HUGE deal and makes me SO angry! She is trying to be a good mother by finishing high school AND wants to give her child the best food she can.

Here is the article...(I tried to write emails to the school officials but they shut off their Facebook and emails bc of all the people like me who are beyond upset)

  • She is only a sophomore... teen pregnancy terrifies me.

On topic, hope they sue the school.

    This.

  • she has breaks I am sure - lunch, study hall....and where do the teachers pump there? Plus there are laws that allow students to have their baby AT school WITH THEM! My DH was born when his mom was 16 back in the 80's. He started HS when he was born! LOL

She does likely have breaks. I teach and pump in my classroom, so there may not be a designated area, but administration needs to figure something out.

I'm not sure if all states allow babies at school... I really don't think Iowa does, but, honestly, I haven't looked into it!

*lurking* The superintendent later commented that she would be allowed to pump at school. However, he made a comment that she can't use the shared icebox (teachers lounge?) to store her breast milk in during the school day because of contamination risks, which is BS since breast milk is the only bodily fluid that can be stored in community refrigerators.

He also ended his statement by saying that teen moms have access to schools in the state that allow them to bring their children with them, pump, breastfeed, etc and that if the teen mom chooses to not attend that school then basically she has to deal with the consequences. Unfortunately, this is happening in the school district I was raised in (though I chose to go to the local tech school instead) so it's ALL OVER my facebook feed right now. The mother isn't asking to bring her baby to school, she just wants to pump. She shouldn't have to attend an alternative school in order to do that, though personally I think I would rather do that so that I could see my baby during the day, but that's just me and I'm not 16. A friend of mine was a teen mom in this same school district and chose to attend the alternative school. She said that the education she received there was sub-par and she was very dissappointed with that. Ugh. I hate that Delaware is always in the news for sucky things. At least we have Joe Biden! (I can't pick just one Biden pic, so you're getting them all! You're welcome.)
