High-Risk Pregnancy

Hydrops?

I am 13wks pregnant with twins. Today an ultrasound shows that one is retaining fluids, we were sent for genetic counseling. The 2 most likely causes are trisomy 21 (downs syndrome) or a heart defect. My husband and I are 24, we have no genetic historyof this in our families.

To vent more, I have medicaid. I am grateful that it's available to me, considering I stay at home with my 9mo son, and my husband works as a department manager. He is type1 diabetic, and needs the insurance to live. Also, if he paid for insurance, we wouldn't be able to afford much of anything. With that said....I'm disappointed in the Hospital that I have been receiving care. It is NUMC, a university hospital...or planned parenthood. I am rushed out of appointments, and nobody speaks proper english. It is frustrating. I have a history of miscarriage, and I am Rh negative. When I researched the one word they said that stuck in my head aside from abnormal, was hydrops.

I looked it up, and it can be either immune or non-immune. Earlier in my pregnancy I was bleeding, and I have been feeling very faint, etc. I also have a sharp pain in my abdomen, on the left side, that they did not look into and said is unrelated. I did not receive rh shot. Hydrops can be caused by an autoimmune response from my body if it detects the positive protein on the baby's red blood cells. I am praying both twins are healthy full term babies. I will be going into the office tomorrow, and if they give me a problem I'll go to the E.R.

Please pray for them. I know God answers prayer, and I know God loves these babies more than I ever could. I can't even begin to process this at the moment. "Don't be afraid, just believe." (Mark 5:36) Even if I am worried, I still believe. Thank you to anyone who read this and prayed <3

Re: Hydrops?

  • Are your twins identical at all? I'm asking because if one twin has high fluid and one low it could be twin to twin transfusion syndrome which is dangerous to the babies. It's not genetic. It just happens sometimes. Is there anyway you can get someone to explain it to you better what they saw?

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Even if you have Medicaid you cannot be refused care at any hospital. I would look for an experienced OB or specialist; you may be surprised that many accept patients on Medicaid. Just call around or look them up on the Internet it's definitely worth it especially if your twins are identical.
I'm having mo/di identical twins and am a SAHM with a 19mth old DD. It can be stressful at times but just remember to try and relax and work on getting a second opinion. Good luck to you!
