A little pink.............

For dinner tonight I made hamburgers and baked mac-n-cheese. I noticed after I had half of my burger it was a little pink in the middle. Normally I love my meat with some pink, but being pregnant I know this a no no. I picked out he pink and finished eating. So the point I am making is, do you guys think that it will be ok for LO? I get really upset and stress like I made the most horrible decision ever. Or am I right to be concerned?

  • Your baby will be fine. It wasn't pork or chicken. I don't cook my steaks well done. That's gross.

  • I eat red meat about twice a week, and it's always medium rare. I can't stomach well done beef.

I agree, beef has to be a little juicy and pink to be worth eating.  Don't stress yourself out...

  • So as an animal science major who worked in food bacteriology for a long time- I have to mention this, even though you and the baby are almost assuredly fine.

There is a difference in eating steaks medium or rare, and eating hamburgers cooked that way.  The reason they recommend cooking hamburgers to well done (esp while pregnant, but in general as well), is that since the meat is all mixed together when it's ground, there is no way to kill the bacteria inside the hamburger patty, unless you cook it all the way though.

With a steak, its not all ground up, so the only surface that would have bacteria on it are the sides that are being cooked- the middle is still sterile.  So once you cook the outside of the steak, the inside is just fine to eat medium or rare- the bacteria on the surface has been killed by the heat.

Obviously, the vast majority of people who eat hamburgers medium or rare never get sick- most meat isn't contaminated with anything that will harm you or the baby.  But thats why the recommendation is there for hamburgers, and not steaks.

(Pork and chicken have all sorts of other issues and different bacteria, so those do not follow this rule).

I was JUST going to say this (maybe not worded as well).

Steaks are fine to be medium or medium rare, but you have to be more careful with burgers.

This. And I agree with other posters. I'm sure you and baby will be fine. :)
