AW: my kid, the lab rat

we took DD in for her first experiment today. she was supposed to have her brain waves measured (event-related potentials, or ERPs) while listening to sounds. she let them get her all teched up, but then freaked out when they turned on the sounds. ah well, at least i got this picture of my robo-baby. and a cute free t-shirt!

is anyone else planning on having their LO do research studies? i'm a grad student doing my own research so it was a no brainer to me (non-invasive, easy ones, obviously), but it made me wonder what other people's thoughts are about this.

  • I'd totally do something like that! Sounds very cool.

  • I would if the opportunities were available.

    She looks super cute !!!
  • for those interested, check with your local university or hospital. this one was through the audiology department, but i signed up through the psych department. it'll be fun when she's older too - it's mostly like games and junk where they get candy or prizes. what kid wouldn't love that?

edit: and bonus? this kid has been sleeping for 2 hours and 20 minutes so far.we usually get 35 minutes, max. obviously, it's the magic of science that caused this miracle.

  • If it wasn't invasive or frightening for my kid then I'd likely think about it, but not actively search for it.

Mom to boy H - born September, 2012 and girl Z - born 2005. Wife to Gorgeous George. Slave to the man.

  • I'm forever thankful that parents gave consent for their kids to be a part of my graduate research thesis.

I'm paying it forward by signing E up for research opportunities at UNC. We are in the database but haven't been matched with a study yet.

  • Probably not research studies, but this Sunday she's going to the fire and rescue station at my alma mater so college volunteer rescue trainees can practice taking infant vital signs. The girls who are running it are friends of mine from college and asked if they could borrow DD. In return they are teaching DH and I child and infant CPR.
