Baby Shower at 34 weeks - Input needed

Hello Ladies,

My sister's are throwing me a baby shower on March 16th, which up until now I totally didn't realize puts me at just turning 34 weeks. It's about a 3 hour drive on a good day, can easily turn into a 6hr drive if there are accidents and traffic.

I had an OB appt on Monday, my blood pressure was totally normal and my urine tests ect all came back well within normal ranges so we don't think that's an issue at this time. I've been monitoring at home as well and have had nothing but normal readings, so I asked my OB if it was ok to travel when I was 32+ weeks and she said once I'm past 30 weeks she wouldn't worry about going into labor early and that traveling would be fine. Just to take frequent breaks for walking and water.

I'm still a little nervous about it. I know I'll probably be uncomfortable but I have no idea how uncomfortable. Any STM's have an opinion here? Is a 3+ hour drive totally reasonable at that stage? DH and I were just planning on a quick turn around, drive up day of shower drive back home the next day. My sister said if anything comes up that prevents me from being able to attend they'll still have it, and just facetime me in or something, not sure how that's gonna work.. I guess the party must go on with or without me ...LOL...

  • I didn't have problems being too uncomfortable with either of the boys. If your DH is driving with you push your seat back as far as you can so you have lots of leg room and recline the seat to be comfortable. It would really be all that different than sitting through a long meeting at work.

  • Can they move it up?  That would stink to miss your own baby shower.

You might be just fine, but you might be miserable.  There's no way to tell until you reach that stage.  With my first pregnancy my OB wouldn't let me travel more than an hour away after 26 weeks b/c I had some issues.  At 34 weeks this time around we took a short day trip that was about 3 hours total but there were a lot of breaks in between to sight see and such and I felt fine. It's good that you can stay the night and head back the next day.  that will def help.

  • My advice is to have your sister's throw the shower closer to your home. Why be miserable?
  • Thanks, I feel silly for even asking, but last time we drove up for the Holidays I was pretty miserable and I was about 22 weeks at the time. My tailbone somehow got completely disaligned, most likely from the pregnancy and it causes me alot of pain when sitting for periods of time. I'm sort of dreading the drive! Coordinating with my family tends to get pretty crazy with everyone's packed kids schedules, I know it's probably going to be one of those things where anything can happen so we'll just hope for the best! I'm thinking about making it a long week so I have an extra day to come back and get things organized.

I'm kind of the lone person that moved away from the rest of my family, I have a ALOT of cousins and aunts and I dont' think anyone lives more than an 1/2 hour from each other, plus my grandmother is 96 and cannot travel, I'm all up for the inconvenience if that means that she gets to be there.

  • I'm pretty uncomfortable sitting for long periods, so I would probably drive an hour and a half and then take a long break and then finish the drive. I would also bring two pillows or the snoogle, to wrap around my back and rest my arms on.

This would be my vote too. Drive halfway, take a nice long break, drive the other half, stay overnight, and break up the drive the same way on the way back. I think it will be okay as long as you listen to your body and take enough breaks.

  • It's hard to say because everyone is different.  At 34 weeks my main discomfort with DD was all the swelling...I really needed to be able to put my feet up at that point.  So I'd suggest bringing some books or something to stack under your feet.  Then again, I had preeclampsia and was more swollen than most, so this may not be an issue for you.  I think you will be fine for the drive, by that point you will probably know what makes you uncomfortable and what doesn't, so you'll have a better idea of what to do.

  • I think it totally depends on what you are comfortable with.  With my first, I traveled to NYC (2hrs) when I was 37-38 weeks, no problem.  With my second, I did a 6 hour train ride solo with a 2yo at 38 weeks, then ended up going into labor the next day.
