Steamer microwave vegetables

So as far as plastics go you don't want BPH in dishes that you are going to heat food in.  What about the frozen steamer veggies?  Are they safe?

Re: Steamer microwave vegetables

  • I would assume that the companies that make them wouldn't package them in something harmful since that's how you are supposed to cook them.

  • Are you talking about those frozen deals where you just throw it in the microwave and it steams as it cooks?

I can't really see how it would benefit the manufacturer to have the product in something unsafe like that.

  • I was using the broccoli ones for my kids but then my SIL made a comment and now I wonder how safe they are.  So now I try and buy fresh and steam them. But the bags are soooo much easier!

  • I would hope they make them safe but think of all the other products on the market that aren't necessarily safe or healthy.  Artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup and there are plastic products with BPH in them.  A question I am going to ask my MD for sure but my appt isn't for a few weeks yet.  I was just wondering if anyone happened to ask their MD about it already.

  • The manufacturers aren't trying to put your food in anything harmful, but microwaving anything in plastic is not necessarily "good". It's best to microwave in glass. I usually just open the bags and dumb them in a glass bowl and pop them in the microwave.
