Spotting - Brutal Doctor? Long Post

So, just like many other posts on here, I've been spotting as well, since Sunday night. I am currently 8 weeks 2 days.

Monday morning came - called my Doctor right away (keep in mind this is a new Doctor, wish I could go to my family Doctor but he's 2 hours away) Made an appt for 7:50pm last night.

After waiting for about an hour and a half, he finally came in and we talked about my spotting (dark brown, only when I wipe, never touching my panty liner). Right away he said, "Okay, I'm going to examine you to see if your cervix is open or closed" This caught me off guard as I figured he would just send me for an ultrasound.

So, he checked me, said he could only see old blood, no new blood and that my cervix was closed. However, while giving me the run down of his exam he kept talking about nature running it's own course, etc etc. He was basically speaking as if I'm bound to have a miscarriage. I'm aware this is a possibility, I've had 2 miscarriages in the past and this is exactly how my last one started out (brown spotting - turned to red) but - with my cervix being closed I thought he'd be a little more, sensitive.

He diagnosed it as a threatened miscarriage, of course hearing that freaked me out, however after some reading - every woman that spots and her cervix remains closed is technically going through a threatened miscarriage situation - it's more of a term they use, I suppose.

He put me on bed rest for a few days and told me to come back on Friday to basicall do the exact same exam again and see how things are going. This confuses me. Why won't he send me for an ultrasound? When I asked him, he said "An ultrasound won't show anything, even if the baby is still growing and the heart is beating, a miscarriage can still happen" and while I get that, especially with my cervix being closed, why wouldn't he send me for an ultrasound to get an update on the baby?  We had an early scan at 5 weeks 5 days and baby had a hb of 100 and he was really happy with that. HCG levels we're 15439, he was also happy with that.

Now I'm here, on bed rest, freaking out cause I left my Doctor's office feeling helpless and hopeless. Should I be switching Doctors? Does it seem weird to anyone else that he won't send me for an ultrasound? He also hasn't once checked my Prog. levels, I figured with my previous losses he would. He said it's not needed.

If you've gotten this far, I congratulate you.

Any advice/opinions?

  • uhh an ultrasound will at least possibly show a cause for bleeding. There are causes for bleeding that mean impending miscarriage. Yes a miscarriage could still happen, but it would narrow down possibilities a lot. Are you bleeding because baby has already stopped growing, or because you might have an SCH, or maybe something just got irritated in there.

Edit there are causes of bleeding that DON'T mean impending miscarriage

  • I'd also want a second opinion.
  • My doctor would have given me an ultrasound.  If you aren't happy with your care, I would switch right away.  You will only get more frustrated as time goes on and you are seeing this doctor more often.

  • I am sorry you are going through this. If it were me I would get a second opinion. I might even consider switching practices. If you don't care for the way your doctor treats you during an episode like this I would wonder what LD with that doctor.

  • Your doctor should have confirmed a heartbeat, if for no other reason than to give you some peace of mind, which is something a good OB would understand the importance of.
  • I sorry you are going through this. It would have been nice if he would have given you more answers. Is your doctor going to see you again in a few days? The open endedness would drive me nuts! Sending many T&Ps your way!

  • ooooo...I can only tell you what I would do and I would find another Dr. if I left the office feeling less than confident in his decisions and efforts to check on things.

  • It sounds like you don't trust your doctor. You need a doctor you can trust.  If you don't trust him, then you need to move to a new doctor.

I wonder if he's more of an old school doctor.  A belief that progesterone isn't necessary tends to follow with that.  I'd bring up the progesterone issue with him again, as there don't seem to be any detriments to adding it in.  It's worth asking for again.

  • If it were me I would get a second opinion.  This is a scary time and if anything it's nice to at least see the baby and hope and pray you hear a heart beat and hopefully figure out why your bleeding!  Best of luck and T&P to you!
