cold weather moms - carseat & winter coat ?

I've been wrapping them w/ blankets but I think it's time for something warmer.  From what I understand, they shouldn't wear thick coats in their carseats?  What's a Minnesotan to do?  These boys need coats or big warm suits on...we've just switched to our convertible carseats so the bundleme things are out.  Also, they HATE their mittens and figure out how to get them off any way they can.

What do you do?

  • I have the same problem.  DD is still in her infant seat so I bundle her up in a blanket and put a hat on her but she refuses to wear mittens.  I know you aren't supposed to put coats, etc on them which is fine because DD would sit in her carseat and ROAST.  But I also am wondering if I am doomed to a homebound winter....

  • I live in Ny so not anywhere near as cold as you get.  But I did look for a coat that was as non-puffy as you could get.  If you google winter coats there's a website that gives the names of coats that are carseat friendly.  I didn't bookmark it and I don't remember the name.  Good luck!
  • Hoodie - blanket, blanket, blanket, blanket.
  • You aren't supposed to put puffy coats on them, the issue is when people put on puffy coats they only tighten the straps to the jacket. put your DC in the seat, tighten as normal, take them out put on their coat and don't loosen it. That way it is still safe. If for any reason you have to loosen it to get the jacket in, it is deemed unsafe.

  • I put DD in a thinner hoddie, hat, wrap her legs with a blanket and then put her coat on.  Once we are in the car I take the coat off and put the blanket over her.  It only take a second to take her coat off and put it back on once we get to where we are going.  I got a reversable coat that zips and has buttons.  I just button it for the walk to the car and use the zipper if we will be outside for any length of time.

  • I do a thicker fleece like jacket winter hat and hood over that.. socks, fuzzy socks over those. And a blanket in the car over her.. She is really just going from car to house !  I know though i miss using the infant carrier w/the bundle me!!
  • We have a fleece type overall snow suit. Haven't used it yet, but thinking it is time. Still using a hat and warmer hoodie with a bundle me in the infant seat. It won't last much longer though.
  • Thanks, I grew up in Florida and I don't think any of those people down there understand how good they have it when it comes to commuting w/ little ones.
  • I have a fleece snowsuit type thing that isn't puffy. I also have a non puffy coat I use that is OshKosh that works in her car seat. I would do something fleece with blankets if needed outside. I wouldn't bundle too  much in the car though b/c it can get hot in there.
  • I made a carseat coat (actually I've made a few of them now), it's basically a big poncho with an open back, when she goes in the sear I flip it over her head and buckle her in and then flip it back over her to keep her warm.  No more fighting for arms, I love it!  Could no be any easier!  They are pretty easy to make for yourself or if you don't sew I have been making a few (for SAIF girls too!).  page me on SAIF or check out my etsy shop

  • My son wears a really warm fleece jacket from Childrens Place (its like a zipper sweatshirt but its lined but still thin enough that I can get him snug in his seat) and the he wears a hat and mittens and then I still throw a blanket around him. It's getting pretty cold here in MI too, but he seems plenty warm with this so far. But it's a pain. I wish he could still fit in his infant seat! :(

  • Umm, I put DS in a puffer coat. Yes, I have to loosen the straps a bit to accomodate, but then I make sure they are snug. I consider the coat to be extra padding. If the straps are snug on top of the coat, they should prevent too much extra movement. I've been avoiding the mittens...but its been pretty darn cold!
  • we have a fleece type jacket from carter's. It is thin enough to be safe in her car seat, but it's also warm. Actually, right now, I have to take it off in the car or she over heats and screams.

I'll see if I can find a link to one like it. I'd seen them at BRU too, but they only had blue and brown and we wanted pink.

it's sold out online at Kohl's, but that's the one we have (in pink). The last time I was at the Roseville BRU they had them in stock.

  • I have a one piece snow suit.  It's fleece so it's not thick but she gets really toasty in it.  In the car she has two blankets.  When I take her out of the car I cover her with a big blanket.
  • they sell car seat covers at Wal Mart for under $15.00. they are wonderful!!! We don't evenKiddopotamus - CozyUp Carrier Cover, Green put a jacket on her.
  • What do I do?

    1. Start car and heat.  Wait for 5 minutes before heading out.

    2. Wrap Scarlett up in blankets.

    3. Put Scarlett in warm car, place blankets on top after she is strapped in.

(bring coat, mittens, ect if it will be a hike to get inside once we arrive at destination or if we will be outside.  For ride home, if I can't prewarm car, I just strap her in with the blankets on top and crank the heat up)

  • i've been using the blankets. . i warm up the car . ?wrap her like a baby burrito and car her out to the car with a hat. . i have a coat if needed.
  • DS is usually wearing a sweater/fleece or warm outfit.  For trips out I simply put a hat on him, strap into car seat and cover with a thick warm blanket.  I warm up the car.  If we are just going in and out of places quickly, this does just fine.  If I bundled him up any more he would sweating.

If we are going to be outside for an extended amount of time, then he has a hat and mittens on and a thick fleece "snow suit" type thing over his outfit.

  • I dress DS in a footed one piece fleece with hood and built in mittens over his clothes and then put him in a wearable fleece blanket (basically a blanket with compartments for his feet). ?This seems to keep him plenty warm when we're in the car. ?If we're out in the stroller however, he wears a full on snowsuit.
  • I feel your pain. We always make sure to put on a warm hat that has ear covers, mittens that dont come off (found a great hat/mitten set at bru for 10$ and hasn't come off once) and a light hoodie.  We warm the car before we go anywhere like that, and if we can't for some reason -we add extra blankets.  It sucks being a minnesota mommy for this reason. Freakin BRRR!
  • We are in the Washington DC suburbs, and it's cold here now.  My daughter is wearing a winter coat.  I can't just wrap her in blankets. That's just crazy.  She is in her carseat to and from daycare each day, and that is pretty much it.  I can't afford to keep taking her to the doctor because she's catching a cold because she is not wearing a coat.  I have her snug in the carseat...she's not going anywhere.  Just seems crazy to me not to have a coat on your child in the middle of winter.  just my opinion.
  • I use a light quilted jacket that is thin but dense (if that makes sense).  He wears a hat, mittens if it's pretty cold and I carry him out the door in a blanket.  Oh, and I warm up the car before heading out if possible.
  • Like pp's we put a fleece on him as well as a hat and cover with a couple of blankets.  Its generally a pretty short trip from the house to the car.  If we are doing anything more then we have his jacket handy and put it on him after he's out of the seat.
