Sleep in swing at night?

Hi all,

My babe is three weeks old sleeps so soundly in her swing, but hates sleeping in her pack'n'play which is beside our bed for now.

I'm thinking the space feels too open for her, and the swing cradles her body so she feels more secure. She hates swaddling...is it bad to let her sleep in her swing until she outgrows this phase? I am putting her down in her real crib  once a day which she seems to like okay (smaller room). I'd just move her to her crib, but it's all the way upstairs (we have a main floor master bedroom) and I want her to reap the benefits of cosleeping.

I usually feed her at 9pm, she falls asleep right away in the swing (swing stops after a set amt of time). She'll wake up about midnight, three and six for a feeding. Each time I get her to sleep and put her in her pack n play...she grunts, whines and eventually cries out so she ends up back in the swing or in bed with us.

Does anyone have any ideas?  Don't know if it's bad for her little back to be in a swing that long?

Re: Sleep in swing at night?

  • The only thing to be concerned about his it causing a flat head in the back and the muscles of LO's neck getting tight in that position. This happened to a friend if mines baby. He needed physical therapy for awhile. Might not happen to everyone. My suggestion is, if you use it at night, don't use it during the day.

  • Eloise slept in hers for about a week right around 3 weeks old, she can move her head in it so she wasn't always in the same position so I wasn't too worried about causing a flat spot. We did keep trying the PnP to see if she'd take to it better and she has so I'm glad we used it for the week!
  • Irelyn is 6 weeks old and has been sleeping in her swing since she was a week old. So far her head is fine. I would be no different then her sleeping in a RnP but those are banned in Canada.

  • DS has been sleeping in his RNP for the past two days. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • Leo has been sleeping in his bouncer since about day 10. Before then he slept in bed with us, but we were always so worried about it. He refused to sleep in his crib or anywhere else if he was lying flat and not snuggled. We talked to our pedi about it and she said it's totally fine as long as the bouncer is in a safe spot. We took the mattress out of the crib and the bouncer sits on the mattress board. That way at least he gets used to sleeping in there. When the weather gets a little warmer we'll start to put him on his mattress and elevate it at an angle to get him used to it. Baby steps!
  • DD doesn't like to sleep in her pack and play either.  We also tried the bassinet attachment but she hates that as well.  She'd sleep for 5-10 minutes and then wake up wailing.  One night she slept in her swing and for about the past week she's been sleeping in her bouncer.  The only thing we can think of is she likes the angle and hates being flat.

I am going to try putting her back in the pack and play in another week or so, just to try.  In a month or so she'll be in her crib, so she's going to have to get used to it sometime!

  • I think it's fine. DD has been fussy in her RnP at night so I plan on putting the swing in our room tonight and see how she does. My RnP and swing are the same brand and design (Snug a bunny) so the padding is identical.

Love it. My mum keeps telling me I should get her out of her swing and into her room. My response is always when I get more sleep I will. Until then I am not wasting the few hours I get trying to get her down. DH doesn't see the big deal either with not moving her .
