STM: diapers

so i've stocked up on 1 box of newborns (88) and 3 boxes of size 1 (174) diapers.  does this sound like an adequate amount until LO reaches size 2? of course, this is just based on average birth weight and average growth... i know every baby is different.  i'm still tempted to purchase a second box of newborn diapers, but thought maybe the ones supplied by the hospital and the box i have might work until she reaches size 1. tia!

  • I think that may possibly be too much if you purchased another box of newborn. They really don't stay in them long.

  • I had an almost 9 lb baby so the newborn size was almost useless to me.  She barely fit into them long enough to use up one small package.  I can't remember how long she used size 1, but it wasn't long.  Maybe a month or so.  I'm probably not the best one to give advice since I had a chunker from the very begining.  She is still on the top of the growth charts Wink

  • I bought the biggest box of newborns (only one) and then one box each of size 1 and size 2, but that's only because they were on sale and I didn't want to buy a second box of newborn diapers. I have two of the jump packs of size 1 diapers (about 80 total) from the decorations and left overs from my baby shower. DD was in her newborns forever, I'm thinking we switched to size 1's when she was almost 10 weeks old and if they go through 8-10 a day, that's a lot of size newborn- but she's almost 4 now and still wears a size 2T in the waist (tall and skinny little girl) so she's always been petite. This time around we're having a boy- my nephew who is a month older than DD was in a size 2 by the time we moved DD into a size 1 so I'm not stocking up until I know how big he will be. We have a grocery store right around the corner so if we run out DH can always buy a small pack to get us through in a pinch. If you've got the space you can always stock up and keep your receipts to exchange if necessary, but I don't plan on it.

  • I stocked up one 1's and 2's. I didn't buy any newborns yet. I figured if she needs them I'll just have DH or someone run out to buy them. I think what you have will be fine and you can buy more as you need them. DS went through like 10 diapers a day as a newborn so that whole box might only last a week!

  • It should be fine. Hard to tell when they will move into a 2, but I wouldn't buy any more newborn diapers. We just skipped those altogether and will probably do the same this time around. They go through like 10 diapers a day in the beginning though so even if your LO outgrows newborn quickly, they'll only last like a week and a half anyway.

Well, I'm a little bit of a different situation because my DDs were tiny, but we went through 5ish big boxes of newborns plus the hospital stash (the NICU really stocked us x 2).  I think we only did one box of size 1s before we went to the Pampers size 1-2 that Sam's carries.  I'd probably hold off on getting any more until your LO is born.

  • I wouldn't get anymore newborn size. You can use size 1s and just fold the top down if they are a little big.

  • I think you have a good stash to start off with, but you will definitely be buying more of one size or the other. Newborns go through 10-12 diapers a day! But you don't want to buy too many newborn diapers, since they can outgrow them quickly. There is no way to know how long your baby will stay in them - my 1st lasted only a week in newborn diapers, and my 2nd was in them for about 3 weeks.
  • I got one bulk box of 1s from diapers.com and I am hoping that will be great. All ,y friends said not to order too many newborns because you will get them at your shower or they will not be in them long.

  • I think that sounds like plenty. I've found that when it comes to diapers there isn't a HUGE difference in the actual sizes (like when you go from newborn to size 1 the diapers aren't really that much bigger) the biggest thing that changes is absorbency. Like pp said you can always just fold down a size 1 if you need to. Also I've noticed a lot of FTM's posting and worrying about stocking up on diapers and as a STM here are my thoughts: you can always just go buy more diapers! It's not like there is a diaper shortage or that you will be so useless physically that you wouldn't be able to manage to run to a store real fast and buy diapers, especially in a day in age where diapers are sold at SO many types of stores (grocery stores, pharmacies, heck I've seen them at gas stations). I wouldn't stress about stocking up, obviously have some on hand but I wouldn't buy too many in advance until you have a better idea of the size of your baby and what works best for the baby. If its financial reasons then set aside money now for diapers instead of buying. HTH!

  • Whrn I brought my DD1 home she was 6#4oz. She was in NB for somewhere between 4 and 6 weeks as I recall. Figure 8-10 diapers a day. I would say that is a safe amount.
  • Since you don't know what size you'll need from the get go, I'd see if you could purchase 1 or 2 all in one cloth diapers that grow with baby to use as standby just in case you run out in the middle of the night. Then you don't have to literally run out in the middle of the night.
