Talk to me about skinny convertible car seats please!

I still have the babies in their infant seats, and those along with my oldest son's Eddie Bauer convertible car seat *just* fit 3 across in my XC60. But I need to start planning now, before the babies outgrow their seats....

I know the Diono Radian is a skinny option, at 17" wide. Are there any other models that people would recommend? I'm trying to figure out if I need to get one or two (we actually have 3 convertibles, but they would not all fit across), or if I need to swap cars with my hubby for the foreseable future b/c he has 2 more inches across than I do... so many questions, so many numbers. Oh, and at $200 a pop, yikes!

Any advice or tips or whatever would be great, thanks!!!!

  • All I can tell you is don't get Britax Marathon 70's. Great seats but having two pretty much takes up the entire back seat of our Camry. I can fit back there if I need to, but it isn't comfy!

  • I had a similar issue needing to fit two convertibles side by side in a smaller car.  I did a lot of research a finally decided on Safety 1st On Side Air.  I couldn't afford $400+ for the Diono's and these were a bargain compared to those.  You could get 2 extra for your DH's car for the price of one Diono. They definitely aren't a high end seat but they were well rated and most importantly narrow and made to fit in a smaller car.  I think they are about 17.5-18" wide.  So far they are working well for us.

  • Evenflo Titans are pretty skinny, and much less pricey.

  • We have the Diono Radian 120s. I searched and found them online for less than 200 each. I didn't mind spending a bit more since they convert to boosters and they have high height/weight limits for RFing.

  • We switched our Britax for a Cosco Scenera.  They are really well safety rated, a lot more compact, and around $50 at Target/Walmart etc.

  • We have the trio 3 to a row, they are in Radians...now Diono. I like the RXT a tad spendy maybe, but it is a 5pt until 80 lbs and then a high back booster to 100 lbs...could be the last seat you ever have to buy.

These are what we got for the nanny's car and I like them!  We have the Radians in my car.

we have these too, they fit across the back with a booster as well. if you do go the diono route keep an eye on kohl's. if you get a 30% off coupon you can usually get them cheaper then other places.

there were a lot of complaints about the radian latch system when rear facing and then they changed their name to diono but didn't change anything else. If I did rear facing I would use the seat belt instead of the latch on them. Even the police at our inspection said the seat belt was better for those seats, the latch is loosened easily.
