I know this is controversial. But I'm curious...what are your thoughts on putting rice cereal in a baby's bottle if not pediatrician directed? Is 2 months too young?
Personally, I think 2 months is way too young and it's a choking hazard to put it in their bottles. There's a reason pedi's recommend waiting to 4 months to start cereals if you're going to.
My SO wants to try it, I've said no. The pedi told us nothing but BM for 6 months, but I know lots of people whose put rice cereal in their LO's bottle. I'm just not comfortable with it.
Too young. A friends wife did it with her 3, and told me it was the greatest thing ever. I refuse. Their digestive system just isn't ready for anything other than BM or Formula. I think even if A had reflux, I would be asking for other solutions if my pedi recommended it, and have it be a last resort option.
Are you wanting to? Is it for reflux? Have you talked to the Pedi about it?
I know plenty of mamas who have done this to try to get LO to STTN. I would talk to your pedi and see if there's a certain way or amount or whatever. if it is properly dissolved, then it shouldn't be a choking hazard. I would watch for constipation though. Rice is known to do that.
My LO has slept through the night since 4 weeks and doesn't have reflux, so we don't have a reason to. But when you talk to older generations (my dad, aunt, grandma), they don't understand why we don't do it "these days". In my baby book, I was given rice cereal at 8 weeks, as were my siblings. It was the norm 2-3 decades ago, and now it's a big no-no. We just had a discussion about it in our FB group, and then I brought it up to a couple of girlfriends who are moms. It's interesting to hear people's opinions on it.

No, I'm not wanting to do it. My LO doesn't have reflux, so I haven't talked to my pedi about it. We just had a discussion in our FB group about it and I was curious what other moms think.

I thought I remembered you saying your LO sleeps awesome...that's why I was curious where this was coming from.
So for my in depth opinion, though I think Kiraliz just covered it, I don't want to introduce anything that is just filler. I don't want to introduce anything that could potentially constipate him either. Just like I wouldn't add water to a bottle of BM or more than what was called for with formula.
C sleeps pretty good through the night, I consistently get a 6hr stretch from him and once in a blue moon up to 9hrs.
The way I see it why mess with a good thing??
Babies have to eat frequently... which honestly isn't that far off base from adults. Adults are supposed to eat smaller more frequent meals too... but a lot of them just gorge themselves... then they can't seem to ever be satisfied. I know many may think it's a far stretch, but adding any fillers to my LO's bottle just seems like I'm setting him up to go down that path.
I know this isn't a well formed response up there, but basically I want to treat my LO as I would like to be treated and I wouldn't want to be given filler.

Oh okay. I know it used to be the norm, but so did a lot of things that aren't still done today. I want to do what's best for my baby, and adding a filler feels like it would benefit me more than her..I already don't like that I ended up having to give her formula.

It absolutely is still a choking hazard. Young babies don't have certain digestive enzymes yet, and if the cereal comes back up because of that - dissolved or not, LO can choke.
Hi Watermelon!
I guess I was thinking about choking going down, not in coming back up. That makes sense.
I know this is controversial. But I'm curious...what are your thoughts on putting rice cereal in a baby's bottle if not pediatrician directed? Is 2 months too young?
What is your goal in doing so?
It's a huge choking risk for babies, especially for those whose parents do this to try to get them to sleep longer. It sits in their bellies - babies lack digestive enzymes for this sort of food at a young age - it often comes back up, and babies can choke on it. Giving food too early is associated with a higher risk of obesity and diabetes later in life. And it messes with babies' normal hunger signaling cues, which means that LOs won't feel when they are hungry and thus miss out on nutrition they would normally get.
In short, such a bad idea. I hate that this topic keeps coming up.
I'm not doing it, but as I said above, older generation family members keep asking if I've started yet like it's expected! A couple friends don't see the problem, and some are adamantly against it. I was just curious what the consensus on the BMB was.

My dad did it with me at 6 weeks and I turned out fine. He was one of the first ones that suggested I do it to get DD to STTN, but like I said, I'm just not comfortable doing it now. I know it's super controversial and people seem to jump down your throat if you bring it up. I don't know if I'll wait the full 6 months, but at least closer to it.
This is kind of my viewpoint on it. He is a great sleeper, so why mess with it?!
BUT...I'm not so opposed to it that I would judge other women who do. I know that some pediatricians prescribe it. Some are anti. In the end, we will all do what is best for our families.

I don't plan on using rice cereal at all. But my mom said she gave it to my brother when he was 2 days old, yes, DAYS! She tried breast feeding, but "wasn't getting anything" no one told her your milk doesn't come in right away and my brother ate a lot, so she gave it to him. He's fine now, super smart, no health problems and over 6 feet tall. So it is odd the difference in generations.

Burn me, idgaf, half u girls already hate me and think im crazy neway. With dd, at 2 months she was eating 8oz every 2 hours. No joke. I asked my pedi, he said no. I went home and did it anyway. She would take 6oz (with 1 formula scooperful of cereal) and went 4 hrs. She was full and happy after those bottles.Shes alive ... now 3yrs old, she never choked and she wasnt crying to eat every 2 hours. Honestly do what you think best.

I thought you said your DD was giving you 12hr stretches at birth and you had to wake her after 6 hours to eat?

I'll burn you since no one else will ...going on a forum and basically telling women to ignore their Pedi's advice and saying "do what you think is best" is straight up awful advice. Just because your DD is fine, doesn't mean $hit and I don't think you should be giving advice if you are going against your Pedi's instructions.

Oh YEAH!! Good looks Rach!
Which one is it? Did she STTN or wake every 2 hours to eat??
@rach- yes that was at night. Im talking about during the day. I didnt give it to her to make her sttn. She was just always hungry, even after the 8oz bottles. She still eats like a pig and sleeps 8-12 hrs a night at 3. I wont b giving lo cereal, he doesnt seem to need it.

Hmmmmm.... okay. Sorry you couldn't be bothered to feed your child adequately throughout the day even after she let you get plenty of beauty sleep right off the bat.
You're absolutely right. How could i have been SO selfish? I'll do better with this one, i promise. Think you could give me your handbook? It seems the hospital i went to didnt have any.

LOL
It's not a handbook I'm equipped with, it's common sense.
Also, there's a quote feature that comes in quite handy.

Seriously, snark away but don't get all bent outta shape when people call you out on your decision to go against your Pedi's instructions. Women come here for good advice and support...you are basically saying "Do what you think is right, even if your Pedi says no" Tsk Tsk
@rach- mobile, cant quote. Sorry. Another one of my inadequacies. @red- dont believe i said i was smarter, nor do i believe i am. @quintonsmom (i believe) - i never told anyone to ignore their pedis recommendations. Simply stated that i did. I do believe i did what i thought was right. Not because i was being selfish but because she was still hungry, even after those 8oz. Like i said, you can burn me. And clearly you feel you had to, thats fine. Many of us got cereal in our bottles at very young ages, we are all here. My dd got cereal in her bottle, shes here and it did not harm her in the least. If giving my experience and suggesting a mother "do what you find best" is terrible, then perhaps i deserve to be burned. However, if that mother felt it best to listen to her pedi when everyone in her immediate circle suggested to give the baby cereal am i really giving bad advice?Im sorry if you felt i was suggesting "do what i did bc im smarter and im right" that was NEVER my intention.

Why do you feel the need to come in and give inadequate advice, given that IF what you say about your own child is true, that your child is clearly the exception, not the rule? 8oz bottles with a formula scoop full of cereal is neither healthy, nor normal.
So the part of this that annoys me is the justification that, well, "my parents did it to me, and I'm fine". Yes. You are fine. What about the babies who aren't? It's like saying it's okay to drive drunk because you did it once before and nothing happened. No. You got lucky. End of story. That does NOT mean you can repeat the scenario and have the same results. I don't get why someone would purposely ignore their doctor's advice. Why bother with the doctor at all if you're not going to listen to the trained medical professional. This isn't some situation where doctors don't agree. No. It is almost unanimous amongst doctors that babies under 4 months should NOT have rice cereal in their bottles. There are exceptions, sure, but... seriously. Overwhelming evidence supports holding OFF on giving cereal to an infant.nbsp;

Are you wanting to do this?
Are you wanting to? Is it for reflux? Have you talked to the Pedi about it?
Not needed at all unless warranted by a Pedi for a medical issue. I will/have never given rice cereal to my children.
There was a debate thread a few days ago regarding this and giving kids benadryl for flights.
I definitely would.
