First Post-Delivery Meal?

So, since almost all of my favorite foods are now off-limits (sushi, lox, red wine, cold cuts, my husband's homebrew, clams on the half shell, etc) I have been dreaming (obsessing) about when I will get to taste these foods again.  So much so that my plan is to have my husband smuggle a dirty martini and a tray of sushi from our favorite restaurant in a cooler into the delivery room so that I can indulge as soon as we get our time with baby and they take him/her off to be bathed.  Aside from the baby itself, I can't think of a better motivator to get through labor and delivery!

Anyone else dreaming of the first meal?

Re: First Post-Delivery Meal?

  • I don't have too many things that I have cut ut of my diet while pregnant, but at the end of my last pregnancy I had horrible heartburn so I really had to limit what I ate. My labour was 48 hours and they wouldn't let me eat anything more than crackers so I asked my DH to smuggle me in some takeout for after my emerg c-section once we knew that was where I was headed. Ya.. only to find out you can't eat anything for like 24 hours after and even then it is only prunes and broth. I was so disappointed!! lol

  • I am looking forward to the hospital food. My hospital has a homecooked food cafe and it is great!!
  • I delivered at 7 pm last time the room service was over. I had planned on Jimmy John's anyway so DH went while they cleaned me up it was the most delicious sub ever!!! Not sure what I will want this time. My Dad's best friend brought him a vodka tonic the night I was born!

  • Honestly, after the whole ordeal of giving birth was over with, I was too tired to care about what I ate, I just wanted some food! I had a c-section, but no one told me I couldn't eat until after I had eaten a little bit. DD was born at midnight, and I finally got into my room around 4am and had a snack (at that point it had been 36 hours since I ate anything). Then they came in at 7 with my liquid breakfast and scolded me for eating.

  • My first was born at 7pm. By the time I was in my pp room, it was after 9. We had my mom bring us some italian food and dessert, since the cafeteria is closed. Did you know that some bf babies dont do well with tomatoes, broccoli, chocolate.... DS screamed cried for an hour that night. It took a few days for us to link the screaming fits with certain types of food.

With DD, I had her at 4:44am. Nothing was open! I was starving by the time the cafeteria brought me breakfast. I had my mom bring us burgers at lunch.

Truthfully, once you deliver you are starving, and anything tastes amazing.

  • My hospital has what they call a post-partum punch- i think they just combine all the different juices they have on hand (orange, cranberry, apple, etc) All I remember was drinking about 5 of those things out of a water bottle and asking for MORE! MORE! I do not even remember the sushi my husband brought me, lol

  • My plan is either cheesy fries from Steak and Shake (same thing I had when my daughter was born) if in the afternoon/evening or the Silver dollar hashbrowns from SnS if its morning! :) Yummy!

  • I just had hospital food the next day bc I wasn't feeling awesome after so many hrs in labor. We got to the hospital around 3 am and ended up having a c section at 8:30 pm and made it to our own room after recovery, nursing and bath around 11:30 pm. The last thing on my mind was food. This time since everything is planned maybe a bottle of champagne!
  • right now I am thinking a turkey and ham sandwich!

check back with me in about 6 months... :-)

  • I obsessed about planning my first meal after DD was born, but then I felt so bloated and tired and gross, I really couldn't enjoy anything (especially the drink I had been so much looking forward to!).

It was hospital food and fruit for me.

  • I told DH that I want beer packed in my hospital suitcase. Both my dad & my uncle are brewers and turned us into a bunch of beer snobs. I really miss it.

I haven't stopped eating anything except ahi tuna, so that'll probably be consumed asap after delivery. But I like the way I cook it (pan seared and almost raw in the center) so it'll have to wait until I get home

  • A hotdog with saurkraut, onions and mustard.  I'm not a fan of the preservative free dogs.  Too greasy.

  • The hospital I go to is great when it comes to food... The nurses all have passes to the vending machine (that is full of sandwiches, microwave hamburgers, yogurts, and tons of other stuff) and they will bring you whatever you want from there. The only thing they do not have there is root beer, because that is their code word to get visitors the hell out of your room.

If I decide I don't want anything they have, I'll be sending DH to the grocery store nearby to get me a chicken finger sub with Swiss cheese. And a root beer, lol.

  • With DD I had her in the wee hours so I got a turkey sandwich to hold me over til they started to serve breakfast. With DS I had XH go and get me something from firehouse sub. Not sure what I will want this go round but it will depend on when I go into labor as well.

  • Italian sub.  Can't wait.
  • I had a C/S so my first "meal" consisted of apple juice.  That I then threw up.  I couldn't eat for a few meals at least, but the hospital food wasn't bad.

  • Hard to say. I had grand ideas about what I wanted but by the time I was in my room, lots of family was rolling in and, frankly, I didn't feel very well after being in active labor for over 24 hours. I had a bagel and cream cheese with apple juice from the hospital. I do remember the apple juice tasting incredible to me. Most of the hospital food was awful so DH ran out for most of our meals there.

  • Last time all I wanted was a turkey sandwich from Panera and a beer.

I got both (well the beer was at home).

This time, I have been eating lunchmeat, since my OB said it was fine.  So, the only thing I'm going to want is a beer :-)  Its a plus, because it helped with my milk let down!

  • After my son was born I had grilled cheese and French fries from the hospital cafeteria. It's probably because I was starving, but at the time it tasted like the most amazing thing I had ever eaten. I'll probably get the same thing this time.

  • I hadn't thought about my first post-delivery meal until now....I have to say thank you for making me think of it though.  I now recall how horrible that first meal after having DS was, so clearly, I need to have an alternative in mind.

  • I had my SIL & BIL bring me Subway when they came to the hospital a couple hours after DS was born. I hadn't eaten in over a day and I was starving so eating something good and familiar was more important than anything else!

  • With DD, I wanted my parents to pick me up a hoagie on the way to the hospital.  But as it turned out, they were visiting us and staying with us so I ended up with a burger and fries.  Which trust me, was just great.  I was so glad I didn't have to eat the food at the hospital!!!

  • SUSHI! Probably not the first night (I've heard the food served at my hospital is actually pretty good from several moms). But I'm sure I'll be sending hubs on a sushi run once we're home.

  • I really can't remember my 1st meal with dd, maybe Wendy's? My dream 1st meal would be sushi and a margarita on the rocks from one of my favorite local Mexican restaurants. I actually had friends bring me one as a joke after dd's birth, but I think one of the nurses threw it out :
