Question for people that shred statements, etc.

We recently paid off our car and were receiving paper bills/stmts.  Would you shred these, or since it's paid off would you just put it with the recycling?  I've gotten lazy about shredding things lately but trying to start again.  Cleaning out some paper now and not sure what to do with these. Thanks!

  • I would shred it or burn it.  It has enough personal info on it for someone to steal your identity so I would shred it.  But I would also keep all paperwork for 7 years.  At least here that is the length of time that the government can request paperwork for  if they ever audit you, so even though it's only a car payment, I would keep it for a few years.  We payed off my husbands bike last year and I'm keeping those for a while too.

All of this. We keep everything forever and then when we finally do throw things out we shred it all.. can never be too careful about personal info in this day and age IMO.

  • Thank you!  I will either shred or hold onto them a little longer.  Even with getting most things online I still end up drowning in paper.

  • Shredd or keep. My parents had there identity stolen twice! We are super diligent about anything with our name on I being shredded to pieces. For other reasons too tho besides identity theft.
  • Definitely going to start shredding everything again!  We've been lucky but why chance it when we already have the thing sitting here.
