Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Bottle/sippy cup tips

My LO just turned 6 months and I'm starting to wean her because I keep getting mastitis.  Anyway...she hasn't had the bottle all that much in about a month because I needed to nurse due to the mastitis.  So now she won't take a bottle.  I've tried a couple different kinds and even tried to introduce a sippy cup.

Any suggestions?  I'm weaning super slowly (dropping one feeding per week) and this is the first week.  She's only missing one feeding and she's doing well on solids, so I'm not concerned that she's going hungry or anything.  She has been constipated, I think because she hasn't gotten as many liquids...so anyway, that's my situation.

Any/all suggestions welcome!

  • I wouldn't drop any more feedings until she is successfully taking a bottle. Six months is way too young to be eating solids only. Plus, constipation is a sign of mild to moderate dehydration. Try feeding her a bottle several times a day. Put some breast milk on the tip or gently squeeze some into her mouth so she realizes that there is food in there. However, if she refuses to take the bottle then nurse her. She needs the nutrition and the liquid to keep her healthy.

  • What kind of bottles are you using? That can make a real difference too. DD is super picky and will only use a Tommee Tippee bottle. We've tried many other kinds and she will not take anything but TT. Also, we've tried many different types of sippy cups and she does really well with the soft spout kind.Good luck!
  • I just went to a solid foods class which was conducted by the lactation consultant for the hospital where the class was held.

She said it is ok to give about 2 finger widths of water in a sippy cup, but she recommends the type with the hard plastic mouth piece rather than the soft mouth piece. She said that she also takes the valve out of the sippy cup at first.

The reason she does not recommend the soft mouth piece is because they have to bite it, which means he/she might start biting you while nursing!

  • DS uses Playtex Ventaire bottles.  For sippy cups he successfully uses the Playtex Little Gripper Straw Sippy Cup.  When he tried he didn't get it but by the third time he got it and now needs no assistance.  He gets a little water at each solids meal.  He doesn't drink enough from it that at this point I would attempt to replace his bottle feelings with trying formula in the sippy.  Our Pedi did encourage that by 9or so months he try to have formula from the sippy so by 1 he is off the bottle.  I personally don't care if he has a bottle passed one1 but that was her suggestion.

  • TT makes a soft tip sippy cup that doesn't have a valve at all. It's not spill-proof, but it avoids the biting issue. I'm not crazy about it simply b/c it's kind of hard to get the clear spouty party put back into the top ring after washing it, but it's maybe something to try. We are using it b/c DS swallows SO much air when we try him on other sippy cups.
