BLW

When I first heard about BLW I wasnt into it. I thought it was too risky for me etc etc, so I have been giving my DD purees. Im now noticing she isn't "eating" she's just drinking off a spoon and has no desire to bring food to her own mouth. I would like to give her an opportunity to eat on her own, chew food and let her decide how much she would like to eat. I have no idea where to start, what the rules are, how to address possible allergies... I have all kinds of questions.

Can you recommend some resources, books, websites, that could get us going? What did you use to educate yourself on BLW? I would like to look into this option further and see if it might be a better fit for us.

Thanks :)

Re: BLW

  • The book Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapley is what we use. It gives a good history, reasons for BLW, nutrition information, how to get started, addresses allergies, etc. It's a quick, easy read. Good charts for what foods have which nutrients, even pictures of the learning stages. I really like it and still refer to the nutritional charts.

It's really so easy and so amazing watching DS learn to eat this way. Some days he really eats, some days he nurses more and hardly wants to eat anything. You just have to go with it and be confident and trust that your baby will take what they need when they need it. To me, BLW takes all of the pressure off. All you are responsible for is offering a full compliment of nutritious food, the rest is up to your LO. There's no worrying about how many ounces of food, texture or stages of purees, what LO likes or doesn't, if they're getting too much or not enough, etc.

You may just have to slowly decrease purees since your LO is used to getting some nutrition and calories from them, so I wouldn't stop them all together and switch just to BLW because your LO really won't get much until she really learns to eat.

  • I agree with everything the PP said.  I was very nervous starting out the BLW book made a big difference in explaining both the how and why.  I originally just got the BLW Cookbook based on some online review but once I grabbed a copy of the original book at my local baby store I felt much more comfortable.

I haven't found any good web resources but looking on youtube at some videos may help.  The first two weeks I was uncomfortable watching my LO gag, but once I relaxed and learned to trust him it started to go much better.  I love this approach.  I can't say enough good things about it.  We are eating better as a family and sharing meals is so special. Its great to watch my son develop his eating skills on his own.

  • Thanks Ladies!

I am really nervous about this. Even though it seems the more natural approach, I will definitely have some anxiety about it. But as I watch her eat pureed food, it feels like I will just have to re-teach her how to feed herself and how to experience food on her own. It makes ore sense now to just start with real food. I am really looking forward to sharing the same meal with her!

Im getting the book! Thanks again!

  • We do purees but I also have started giving him more opportunites to bring things to his mouth on his own.... with puffs, cooked peas, cooked pears... and I'm gonna start cooked apples and sliced avacado.

He's getting better at it, but I don't think he would be able to handle just "solids" and no purees yet.  He's still figuring out what to do with it.

I make his purees thicker though, so they aren't soupy enough to just "drink" like you described.  He has to move his mouth still to eat it.

    Just a thought!

This is exactly what we do, I asked my pedi about BLW just last week and she said stick with purees.  She also said if you put 100 pedi's in a room 50 would suggest purees and 50 would suggest BLW, I'm comfortable following her advice though.  I think I'd panic about choking...
