dropping the morning nap

After 3 weeks of awful night time sleeping, awful napping, just being a general brat, we came to a conclusion. She is dropping her morning nap. Already. :(

She had been napping at 10 and 2. Then recently, for both naps, it would be an hour of her jumping in the crib, throwing stuff out of it, general not sleeping.

Yesterday I moved things around a little so now she skips the morning nap, has lunch at 12 or 12:15 instead of 1 and then goes down for a nap. Working a whole lot better. Still a little crabby in the late afternoon/early evening but still way better.

I do wish it was longer than 1.25 hrs though. I need that time. lol. Maybe she will nap longer today as she is adjusting.

Already down to 1 nap a day?! Dang, my LO would be a mess if he didn't have his 2 naps!

I hate it. She is crabby by evening. Of course, this is only day 2 so it may get better. But she absolutely, positively will not go down for a morning nap anymore.

On one hand, it will make errands so much easier now. On the other, I am so not ready for her to grow up this fast. I figured I had another couple months before she she would be a 1 nap a day-er.

  • Our little guy's never been a long nap-er.  On a really good day we usually get just over 1hr out of him (plus side, he'll sleep from 7-7 at night).  He's starting to drop his morning nap too.

He's been trying for a few weeks, but I've been fighting it.  With what little sleep he gets during the day already, I worry about dropping it.  We've pushed it back as late as we can with the whining and he'll sleep a little longer (ooh, a whole 45min, woo hoo) but then he's still tired enough to go down for his second at like 6pm (way too late to go down again).  It's definitely a guessing game trying to figure out what works best.

  • I have a question. I've seen a lot of posts about dropping the morning nap. Is it normal for all babies drop down to 1 nap? As of right now LO gets up between 7 and 8am, goes down for his first nap around 10am then again between 2 or 3pm. He goes to bed no later than 8pm and sleeps about 1112 hours a night. If he is still getting 11ish hours of sleep, do I need to drop the nap?

Not normal until they are a little closer to a year old. I would just follow his cues when to drop it.

  • Mine appears to be going to one nap too....although he is dropping the afternoon nap (weird, right?).  The other day he flat out refused his afternoon nap resulting in him being awake from 1045am to 7pm.  He was happy the entire time at least....but damn was I tired!

My dd does the same as yours, except for the bedtime.  She's asleep by 6:30pm.  I heard a few times on the 9-12months board that it's good to not drop the second nap until your child shows signs for like 2-3 weeks that they're fighting it..otherwise you run the risk of doing it too early.  There are so many reasons why our children could be extra fussy, ie: ear infections, teeth, growth spurt, wonder week, etc...make sure it's not one of those before you drop the nap.  But definitely what Countrygrl said, go with your gut and follow your babies lead.  I have a feeling my dd will be holding on to her second nap for a while yet..but time will tell.

    Thanks!
