My boots weigh 2lbs at least

"You have had a significant weight gain this month." Not the words you want to hear from your doctor. I almost cried. 9 friggin pounds. 9. That's almost 1/3 of the weight I'm supposed to gain in total. WTF. How did that happen? I'm giving 2lbs to my boots and .5lbs to a lack of BM, but that's still 6.5lbs. I never gained more than 4 a month. I haven't changed my eating--I think I've been eating less and healthier. Where did this weight come from?

Anyone else have a big change recently? How do I not gain weight between now and my next appointment? I go to the gym 2x a week, walk my dog daily, and eat plenty of fruits and veggies. I rarely indulge in junk (although I will admit I have a little more lately. That has to stop). Ugh. Yesterday was a rollercoaster. On a postitive note: I got an AWESOME glider from a woman on craigslist. It is amazing!!! Exactly what I wanted at a price I could manage (if I would have bought new it would have been $800 at least). Rollercoaster.

Re: My boots weigh 2lbs at least

  • Sorry you are feeling frustrated! I reallybelieve everyone gains their weight differently during pregnancy. As long as you are eating right and trying to be as active as you can be there is nothing else you can do. If I were you and were really concerned I would probably ask the doctor to refer me to someone who could make sure my diet was what it should be and I would make sure I at least walked every day. Hang in there!

This.  I am just notoriously going to gain at least 40 pounds.  I don't eat crap and I have big babies.  This is when baby is packing on the pounds.  You may be retaining more fluid now than you were before.  For me, watching my sodium really makes a difference.  If I have canned soup for lunch, my fingers are swollen by afternoon from the salt.  Don't beat yourself up, you can take care of the weight after.  If you know you are staying active and eating healthy for the most part, you are taking care of you and your baby just fine.  I really hate when doctors/nurses feel the need to reprimand people for their gain (unless it's really out of control).  It's an emotional time for pregnant mama's...the last thing they need is a nagging provider when you are doing the best that you can.  Keep your head up.

  • I'm so sorry dear. I heard the same thing at my 24w appointment, but it was an 11lb gain between 20w and 24w. :( Not even joking, I took my boots off at my 28w appointment and wore a dress with tights. I did not want to hear that I'd gained too much again.

I've been eating a paleo diet since the beginning of 2nd tri and I love it. I've eliminated dairy and gluten, side bonus of daily BM ;). Thanksgiving and Christmas really threw me off, but when I actually focused on what I was eating from 24w to 28w, I didn't gain a pound. The additional benefit to eating paleo, not a single person would think I was "dieting," because I'm not. It's not counting calories, eat when you're hungry, just eat good things.

That said, and it's taken me 4 weeks to get here, every pregnancy is different. It really, really, really sucks to hear those words [I never have in my two previous pregnancies!], but it's not the end of the world. Continue to stay active, keep indulgences infrequent and no matter the gain, you'll still know you were healthy.

I understand why people are concerned about this, but seriously? Get over it. You know you're going to gain weight, I was in the low end of the Normal BMI category for my height when I got pregnant and I've gained 45 lbs. That's way more than I should have for the whole pregnancy but I know I've been walking and eating reasonably so I'm not stressing about it. I'll end up with leftover pounds after the baby LIKE MOST WOMEN and then I will work it off.

    Just chill out.

    This.

I gained ten pounds from 24 to 28 weeks. While it was a little bit of a shock to me, my OB was not concerned at all. I asked her flat out if a sudden weight gain like that was OK and she reassured me that I was right on track. So I immediately let it stop bothering me.

Just stay healthy and stop stressing.

To answer your first question, this happened because you are pregnant. How do you NOT gain weight from now until next appointment? That should not even be a thought for you! This post seems selfish to me. Im sorry if this seems rude but you eat healthy and are active. You are doing what you should be doing for a healthy baby. That should be your concern. Not, how do I not gain weight!! I could see if you were eating crap and sitting on your arse. Then I could understand your alarm. But honestly, get over it. your going to gain weight and as long as your doing it in a healthy manner than why are you so worried about yourself.

  • Am I selfish? Absolutely. But above all else, the most important thing to me is a healthy pregnancy. Taking care of myself=taking care of baby. The doctor's warning tells me next time I have a swiss cake roll craving, maybe I should go for something a little healthier instead. I'm not saying I won't indulge, but maybe just a little less. And wear lighter shoes to my next appointment.

  • The same thing happen to me at my 26w appointment.

I think part of it was the fact that the holidays fell between my 22w appointment and my 26w appointment.  But I can't really blame it all on the holidays so I have been working on eating healthier.

  • I understand where you are coming from. I gained 7lbs over Christmas, and was pretty bummed out. Since then however, I have been back on track just with eating better and drinking lots of water. The midwives I go to never reprimand, and we only talk about it if I want to...

  • I know it's hard, but, try not to stress. I'm sure its just water weight, especially if you haven't changed your already healthy eating habits and you continue to exercise. You're doing everything you can and if you still gaining weight, that is completely out of your control. Your body is doing what it feels it needs to do to grow a baby.

This is coming from someone who gained 70 lbs with her first (due to over-indulging) and lost all but 10 lbs within the first year through healthy eating and exercise. I've tried my best to not over indulge this time around but I've still gained 24 lbs already. So, it is what it is. I sometimes get down because I feel so big, unattractive and uncomfortable but then I remember I'm growing a baby and I know that I can lose the weight because I've already done it once before.

    Hang in there!

Totally agree. I gained 10 lbs over the holidays. My OB didn't even mention it. I think in some point of pg, your body will start gaining weight no matter what you do. I gained about 55 lbs with each of my last pregnancies. I'm up somewhere around 30 lbs at 30 weeks this time. I think with my normal exercise routine, I should be able to keep my total under 40 lbs this time. I'm just hungry all the time now, and I figure it's not the time to worry and starve myself. There will be plenty of time to lose the weight after baby is born.

I meant boots, but i noticed my boobs are bigger this past week, too. Maybe I should give each of those a pound, too. Lesson learned on that one for sure! Smile

This is clear evidence of my life-long body image / weight issues because I cannot fathom anybody ever willingly stepping on a scale with shoes on!!!

  • I dont think its being selfish to be concerned about the amount of weight you've gained. I had the same experience at my appt this morning. Being overweight to begin with, I was told its ok to gain minimal weight and actually encouraged to try to do so by eating healthy. OP didnt say she was starving herself out of vanity. Gaining too much weight (however much that may be for each individual person is totally different depending on the circumstances) during pregnancy can lead to other health issues for the baby and mom, so I dont think its selfish to try not to gain too much. However, if it happens from time to time that you gain more than expected, please try not to beat yourself up. I too thought I was eating better and healthier this month than the last few and I gained 9 lbs too. My dr said maybe its all catching up to me since I gained 4 lbs before December total.
