1.5 cm dilated already at 34 weeks?!?! Experiences with this?

Hi ladies,

I haven't been on here in a while - how time flies!  Hopefully you all had a great holiday and beginning to the new year.

Yesterday I went in for my 34 week appointment where the doctor did by GBS test and then wanted to check my cervix.  Well, low and behold she said that I was 1.5 cm dilated already.  I was shocked to hear this since I am a first time mom and only 34 weeks.  She said that it is nothing to be concerned about and she is confident that I will go full term (but maybe not to the full 40 weeks).  She did an ultrasound and the baby is breech, but she said that isn't a concern either and he/she has time to turn.  From now on, she will see me every week until I go into labor to monitor everything.  I have heard that this is common to be a couple cm dilated for weeks before your due date.  I was just wondering if anyone had experiences with this.

Thanks!!

  • With DS, I was dilated to at least 1 cm starting at around 28 or 29 weeks.  He came at 39w2d.  I think I was to 3 or 4 by my final check, a few days before my water broke.

  • My cousin who is a FTM has been 1-2 cm dialted since she was 34 weeks as well.  She is now 38 and has had no change or increase.  Do nto worry that this will cause you to go into labor early.  Its just yoru body grearing up :)  Very exciting through.....I can'rt beleive all of us are only noew weesk away from d-day!

  • I was 1.5 cm dilated at 27 weeks and went to 37 weeks so that shows you that it means nothing, don't worry
  • You can be dilated for weeks before your due date, it doesn't mean anything.  Listen to your doctor, they're the trained professional.

And to pp, no, you can't feel your cervix dilating.

  • Like others have said, it means nothing. I'll be declining internals until at least 38-39w this time around.
  • my doc wont even think about internals until 36 weeks unless there is an issue.

cant believe we are all getting so close!!

  • I was a fingertip dilated...I think they consider that 1cm at 31 weeks. I was on bed rest, bc I was also having contractions, but I also went to 37 weeks.

  • My BF was 4 cm dilated from like 34 weeks on and went almost to 42 weeks. She finally went into labor on the morning she was scheduled for induction.

With my first, I was not dilated at all early. I went from 0-10 cm the day before my due date.

Try not to get too worked up about it, you just never know!

  • I don't think it means anything. A week before I had DD I was completely closed and not effaced at all. Then I went from 3cm to 10cm in 2 hours, fun!

  • I was 5 cm dilated with contractions for at least 3 weeks before my son came.  Dilation is only one of many things that needs to happen for labor to occur.
