Bottle Cleaning/Sterelizing

Hi ladies,

I am new to the boards and am very excited to continue my journey with all of you ladies!! I have B/G twins who are now 5 months old.  We still sterilize their bottles after every feeding. We have a rotation of 5 bottles each.  After each feeding I rinse out the bottles and throw them into a glass bowl.  Once we have about 4-6 bottles we wash them with soap and hot water then use the old school method of boiling in a pot.   We also have a nanny who also washes the bottles and I still find that there is that 'forumula ring' around the bottle sometimes which I am not happy about.  What is your take on sterilizing bottles? Oh, and they are on different brands of bottles too.  TIA!

Re: Bottle Cleaning/Sterelizing

  • We have enough bottles for two days. One set is always in use [prepped in fridge, being eaten, or dirty] while the other set is being washed in the dish washer or is on the drying racks. I prep the next days bottles at night once they're in bed and load the dishwasher. Then in the morning I put the clean bottles out to dry. We do not sanitize except when bottles are brand new.

  • We have a bottle sanitizer that sits on the counter.  We do it very similar to you-rinse the bottle out, throw it in a bowl on the counter, once the bowl is full, wash with hot soapy water then sanitize.  I absolutely love our sanitizer.  I will run 3-4 times a day.  Seriously one of the best baby products we invested in.

  • Sterilizing doesn't equal washing. You still need to stick a bottle cleaner in there with some detergent if that is what you mean. However, I do similar to Missa, we have enough bottles for the day and just run the dishwasher every night. I don't sterilize bottles at all, though I do sterilize my pump parts every night.

  • We only sterilize when new also. We have enough for close to 2 days. They just started DC and are toying with STTN, so the number they go through in a day is still a little fluid.

In any case, we try to rinse after each feeding (MOTN this does not happen, LOL). We wash with hot, soapy water daily. We have a Munchkin brand bottle brush that does just fine on the "formula ring" for us. We use Playtex Vent-Aires for both girls.

My take is that formula isn't sterile, nor is the water used to make it (maybe you do?), so my bottles don't need to be. Unless your babies are immuno-compromised, it's probably overkill.

  • We don't sterilize or boil our bottles either except when they were new out of the box.  I wash them every night by filling one side of our sink with soapy water and the other with clear water.  I wash them with a bottle brush in the soapy water then throw them in the clean water for a rinse then onto the drying rack.  It takes me less than 10 minutes to clean the day's worth of bottles.

  • It sounds to me like you are putting yourself through way too much effort!  Do yourself a favor, buy more bottles and just run the dishwasher every night.  It's a piece of cake and you already have enough to deal with.

This! We had a day's worth of bottles and would rinse after each feeding and put into the dishwasher and run every night. The heated dry cycle was enough for my comfort level to sterilize them.

  • We attempted that way when we realized I didn't have enough big pots early on for 16 bottles- so we have done the dishwasher ever since. Best way ever- I run it at night and always have 2 bottles for morning feed.

  • I initially soaked and hand washed bottles but once our help (my mom) left and it was just DH and I, this just wasn't feasible from a time perspective so I started using the dishwasher. I have a basket for the nipples and other small parts. Then I just set them out on drying racks to dry. I don't have any issues with rings around the bottles.

Our pedi said after you initially sterilize them, you really don't have to continue doing it as a baby's GI system certainly isn't sterile. As long as you are taking proper precautions and washing and rinsing everything in warm, soapy water, that's fine.

  • We only sterilize new and run through dishwasher. Occasionally there is still a formula mark and I just run through again after letting hot soapy water sit. We have 13 nipples and 18 btls I think for them now.

  • I only did it a handful of times in my Dr Browns microwave sterilizer.  Personally I don't think it necessary if you wash them in really hot water and dish soap by hand or put them in the dishwasher.
