Mara?

I've been hung up on short names that end in -a for a girl. Probably because my planned name, Nina, was just used by our next door neighbor. Thoughts on Mara?

I really really like it. I've always thought Mara and Maura were very pretty names. Not a huge fan of the meaning though.

I like it. It's on my list. If you don't like the Biblical meaning, it is also a variant of Maria in some countries.

It doesn't appeal to me, although I can't say why. I like Sara and I like Maya and I like Mia. But Mara doesn't do it for me.

But please reconsider dropping Nina because your neighbor picked it. I adore that name. There are plenty of people in the world with the same name. Your neighbors don't own it. It is one of my favorite names and it makes me sad that someone who was going to use it decided not to.

I agree with all of this! Mara is too harsh for me. I would still use Nina if you still love it. You probably won't be neighbors forever!

I think it's a pretty name. Not a personal favorite of mine, but it doesn't start with K and it isn't a top 10, so it's got a lot going for it ;-).

Mara is also the word for Sea in Gaelic. If we have a little girl next she will be named Mara. Mostly due to the fact that DH is a Star Wars nerd and loves Mara the character.

I like short names too! Nina was one of my favorites. I like Mara, but prefer Maura. Other names I like are Lana(Lah-na), Dana (Day-na), Lena, and Nora.

I'm not sure why Mara doesn't seem to be all that well-liked on here (although a lot of replies on this thread may dispute that). I've asked about this name before and gotten mixed opinions. And I don't see it suggested very often.

That said, I love this name. I would consider using it except that it sounds too close to my sister's name (Margo).
