Dumb Q about table food

Should I be handing her big chunks of food, putting big chunks of food on the table, or cutting up food into little pieces for her to eat? I was handing her big chunks of say avocado or melon or whatever. But DeniseRN was saying she pulls it into little pieces. Now I'm confused...

What are you all doing when it comes to table food?

Re: Dumb Q about table food

  • I've given dd big pieces of avocado, and it was the most successful food she's eaten. Because of that, I'm going to try more pieces of food that she can hold and chomp. I'm thinking steamed apple slices, steamed carrot sticks, and bananas will be on this week's menu. :)

  • We do French fry sized pieces. I make sure they're longer than her fist so she can still chew on it while holding it. She ends up breaking them into pieces eventually so then she just has to work a little harder.

  • We do long strips of food about 2-4 in by 1-2 in... Or whatever comes close. Will give 1/3banana, a wedge of homemade quesadilla, a slice of orange. The idea, per BLW, is to give something they can hold in their hand and still have some stick out to chew on.

Ok second dumb question... she likes to stick the entire thing in her mouth. Like if I give her a strip of tortilla once it gets soggy she starts stuffing the whole thing in there. Normal? A phase? Learning process?

  • I give her french fry size pieces too - otherwise she can't get anything into her mouth. She hasn't mastered picking it up with fingers - just her whole fist, so little pieces don't work yet.

Also - bookworm! Congratulations on number 2! It's fun seeing pregnancy tickers again :)
