Beginning Potty Training

My 23 month old DD has been showing interest in the potty for about 2 weeks now.  Mostly at DC.  They let her walk in and check it out and occasionally sit on it to "try."  So this weekend, she became REALLY interested at home.  Insisting that we put her on the potty...needless to say, we bought her a potty chair.  She spent the rest of the weekend sitting and trying.

So my question is now what?  I know that she's interested but I'm not sure what to do next.  Do I just let this phase hang for a little while before actively potty training her?

Were any of your LOs still in a crib when they potty trained?  Mine hasn't transitioned into the big girl bed yet.  Thanks for your advice:)

Re: Beginning Potty Training

  • Personally I would try now.  We just potty trained my daughter, she is still in her crib and wears a diaper to bed.  It's awesome not to have to deal with diapers.

    let her go diaper free and watch her, as soon as she starts to go put her on the potty, over and over again.  It shouldn't take that long for her to grasp the concept.  Don't scold for accident and push fluids so she'll go more.  Also, don't force her to sit on it, she may loose interest that way.

    good luck!

  • I would keep training her.  My daughter trained at 26 months and just recently fully trained at night (my oldest obviously...) on her own.  It's SO nice to be finished with diapers for her!  Just find out what works for you and your child.  I couldn't push fluids, sit her on the potty when she started to go or anything typical.  I just had to let her figure it out on her own.  Quite literally any help from me resulted in more resistance.

    ETA: Mine was in a twin bed at 18 months so I have no advice about the crib except that you probably won't be night training right now and for possibly quite a while.

  • My dd is nearly completely potty trained now and still in a crib
    If you decide you are ready, get rid of the diapers during the day takes awhile to learn not to wet while sleeping and run her to the potty if she starts having an accident
    Rewards worked well for us too we use 1 mm for going on the potty;
  • If she has to go while in the crib she just yells for me, usually she goes before bed and when she wakes up though, the rest is just stalling tactics :
