3rd Trimester

oh my sodium....

I have had a very high sodium day- eating out both in the AM and at lunch.  This afternoon I can't seem to catch up with my fluids and am peeing less than usual. My hand also felt swelled up after lunch!

Has anyone experienced this? I am pretty sure that my blood pressure is a-ok. It's been about 110/60 and I don't feel any different than normal other than the swelling in my hands.

Has anyone had this happen after a meal where you ate out?

How does one travel and eat well in the last trimester? Yikes.

Re: oh my sodium....

  • Yes!  Keep drinking!  When I travel (pregnant or otherwise) I take lots of healthy snacks, and when I get to the destination I find a supermarket and get some fresh fruit and a veggie tray to put in the hotel mini fridge if there is one.  DH used to get annoyed, but realizes I'm a lot less cranky when my body functions properly.  It takes some planning, but it's worth it!

  • I had a day of high sodium intake. When on my cycle, I crave salt. The only symptom I get(???). But the day I ate a lot of salt, my tongue felt all shriveled up and VERY sore. Still trying to get it back to normal. (the feeling of eating too much sour candy)

  • Keep drinking water until you're peeing enough. You won't necessarily feel anything if your blood pressure is up. I have pre-e and am watching closely and don't feel different when my bp is up versus down but it's still clearly an issue.

As far as traveling and eating well, I keep produce in the hotel room and try to go to better places to eat. Starbucks (or even better,  local coffee shops where I can find them) has fruit and nut plates that don't have high sodium, I usually find somewhere local that has veggie-heavy meals, etc. I don't like chain or fast food restaurants anyway, so I avoid those as much as possible even while traveling and especially when pregnant.
