Re: Anyone not get the flu shot for LO?

  • We did not get the flu shot for our kids. Our kids are not in daycare and I didn't feel their exposure risk was high enough to warrant it.

I realize most disagree, but I'm confident in my decision.

  • Rocco got the flu shot, but I did not. Mainly because the flu can kill a baby but most healthy adults will be fine. I realize that kind of makes me a moron for not getting it myself, but I had a very bad reaction to the flu shot when I got it when I was pregnant - arm swelled up so much and was hot for days and hurt like hell. So I am a wimp. Rocco had no such reaction to it, so good deal.
  • DD has not had the flu shot. It was not offered at her 12 mo appt and we haven't made it back for her 15 month.
  • We did not. While I and DH did get the shot, our family doctor advised against the flu shot for this year. Since he now receives my breastmilk and I had the shot, I felt ok with that.
We are at home a lot, he is not in daycare. So far, he hasn't gotten sick at all either.

  • We all got it, even though Lily isn't in daycare or anything.  DH and I are both substitute teachers, so we come into contact with lots of sick kids (and staff members).  I also take Lily to programs at the library and stuff with other kids.

  • We all got it. I didn't see any reason not to. Lo isn't in daycare but I have an elementary schooler. Even if I didn't I would have gotten it for her. All vaccinations are covered 100 for us and neither kid has ever had a reaction or long lasting discomfort so we do all vaccinations.
  • We all got it. I SAH and DS doesn't go to day care. DH works in manhattan and takes public transportation. I can only imagine the germs he comes in contact with every day. Better safe than sorry.

ETA: I had the flu about five years ago and it.was.horrible. I couldn't get out of bed for3 days, and there were time I though for sure I was going to die. I should have gone to the hospital, but was laid off and didn't have insurance at the time. Ever since then I always get the flu shot. I couldn't imagine how a LO would feel with a flu that bad!

  • We did not. Like literally "WE"...as in my aunts, uncles, cousins, brother, parents, SO's parents, SO, and I, etc. oh and Gator, she didn't get one either. The only ones that got them this year was my sister because she is a paramedic/firefighter and is around lots of sickies, and his sister has MS and she got one.

I never understand why people choose not to get the flu shot, especially when most people have it covered by insurance. It's irresponsible.

I agree with crystal. It literally takes 2 seconds. I have to get a flu shot and I have to get an egg free shot and be monitored for an hour afterwards and I STILL get it. And even of your kid doesn't go to daycare doesn't mean they aren't exposed.

  • We all got it. Like someone else said, I've had the flu and it is AWFUL. I will do whatever I can to help ensure DS doesn't get it. I SAH but we are out and about daily and in contact with other people/kids. All it takes is one sick person to infect your LO.

  • We got it but both my sisters choose not to get it for their kids. We all SAH and they didn't feel it was necessary.

IMO, I wanted to make sure I could do whatever I could to make sure DS didn't get the flu. That way, if he did get it, I wouldn't feel horrible thinking it was my fault.

I may not agree with their decisions, but I know they made the decision they felt best.

  • Are you planning to get one then?
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker BabyFruit Ticker
  • I disagree that it is irresponsible. It' s a choice, that's all. I've never had one in my life.

  • We have all gotten one.  MH has a compromised immune system he has to get it.  We have gotten the shot since O was a baby.

Some people say the shot makes you sick.  I think visiting the DR office is why people get sick right after the shot.  I don't let my kids play with anything at the DR office, nor do I touch their germy magazines. (plus they use my office as an urgent care after hours)

  • My DD and I both got the flu vaccine. DH did not. He planned to, but neglected to get it done early enough. Now, our entire area has no flu vaccines left. Literally all surrounding counties too.

That's not an argument for not getting it.  DH and I never got them until last year, even though we were teachers.  We figured we'd risk it for ourselves, no big deal.  But when you're in frequent contact with someone in a high risk category, such as babies and young children, the elderly and those with a weakened immune system, the responsible thing to do is to help protect them by getting the shot.  Last year Lily couldn't get the shot, but DH and I both did.  This year, all three of us got it.

It's not the vaccine that they get sick from since it is an inactivated virus unless you get the nasal mist instead of the injection. People don't realize that it takes up to 3 weeks to build immunity after receiving the vaccine. If you have already been exposed to the virus or get exposed during those 3 weeks then you could still get sick despite being vaccinated.

yes, you stated that your opinion is  "it's irresponsible". the point of the post was asking for those out there that did not get the flu shot for LO....that's all.

I wasn't using that as an argument by any means. Just stating that I've never had one.

THIS.  Although I'm not entirely sure it's really necessary...there are too many strains of the flu to count and the vaccine can only prevent so many of them.  I had the shot and still had the flu this year but it was only 2 days instead of a week.  When I was pregnant was the first time I got it (my doctor didn't really make it seem like a choice) and I figured if I'm getting it for my LO I might as well get it also.  Plus insurance pays so that's a bonus.

Not sure he's my type, but the horse is pretty. Next time find one higher though mkay? Wink I kid. I meant no harm in my previous comment. I've just been noticing people coming back to announce pregnancies that haven't posted since well, this board was created..... and then to ask the hot topic questions LOL

I randomly post. And i never announced my pregnancy. Does that make it ok?

I've been noticing the same trend and was wondering about the rationale.  I mean, it's one thing if you forgot about TB, and now are back and start posting again.  But it seems like most just do a drive-by and disappear again.

It's all good. My panties are unwadded Wink It's just a hot topic on TB and it seems to be the one that keeps getting recycled here on this board

I'm glad you got the panty issue resolved! Party!!!

While I am pregnant, I can assure you that I have posted several non hot topics on TB in the past 15 months. For the most part, I enjoy the time I spend on TB. I am guilty of taking a break every now & again though.

Please keep an eye out for many of my upcoming hot topics...what is LO...doing all day, eating, playing with? How are they sleeping @ night & how many naps during the day?! AND...definitely how to get my DS to eat veggies!!Indifferent

I was actually thinking last night I should have clarified I wasn't aiming those comments at you either (well, maybe the hot topic part, but not the rest) I recognize your sn and I know you post somewhat often. I also think hot topics are great, but I just get tired of seeing the same ones over and over is all.

Congrats on the pregnancy! Do you not have a ticker or did I just miss it? Embarrassed

Thank you! I don't have a ticker yet...kinda forgot how to make one. Embarrassed

All the sarcasm I posted is thanks to my DH, I have none of that on my own, lol!

Update: going to get 15 mths. shots today & if they have the flu shot available DS will get that one too! Can't wait for that feeling of MOTY! Crying

  • DD can't get it because she has an egg allergy, so the rest of the family is going to get it to help protect her. Both kids are in daycare and DH and I are both in education. Lots of germs and sick kids everywhere!
