Getting up to pump

I have 3.5 month old ID triplet girls. I have to pump every 23 hours to maintain supply. Last night I slept through 5 alarms telling me to get up and pump. I feel like the worst momma ever. You guys told me one night wouldn't make a difference in milk production but I went 5 hours, pumped, then slept another 4 hours and pumped. I'm happy for the sleep, but sad about the upcoming FF and pain! I know I'm sleep deprived bc I often don't hear the girls crying don't worry my husband and mom always do. Have any of you ever dealt with this problem? What can I do to GET UP when I want? I know I'm demanding a lot of my body, but it needs to cooperate. Lol. I set multiple alarms, across the room so I have to get up. Last night at 4 am I told DH to turn off the alarm, I already pumped. NO I DIDN'T! I'm lying in my sleep!

Re: Getting up to pump

  • lol lying in your sleep... sleep deprevation is some would argue a stepping stone to insanity.... give yourself a break were not robots...

  • Please please go easy on yourself. Remember too for some women lots myself include sleep is an important part of making the milk. So go ahead and plan for at least 1 stretch when you get a few more hours sleep. Now for your MOTN pump do you have everything you need right by your bed and the pump plugged in? That was key for me so all I would do was sit up and start pumping, including a cooler and ice pack so I could just cap the bottle and put them right back down as well as the part invase I needed to pump again

  • Don't be so hard on yourself.  You need sleep!  Give yourself a break.  I think a 4-5 hour span of time that you are not pumping is good for you, heck even go 5-6 if you need it.  You need to do what's best for your body and if you are sleeping through that many alarms then your body is telling you you need that sleep.  As long as there is someone to care for the babies then take the sleep.

Your pumping during the day just needs to be every 2-3 hours to allow you to have that sleep at night.

You are doing such an amazing job!!  I am in awe each time I see one of your posts and think about triplets (especially pumping and BF triplets).  My hat goes off to you!

  • I agree! SLEEP! I believe if you are depriving your body of sleep and worrying it will affect your supply so sleeping and going easy on yourself may help in the long run anyway! TRIPLETS! WOW! that's incredible! I'm just impressed by your ability to keep up!
