Baby Names

Boy names narrowed to 3, still can't decide!

Abram (nn Abe)

Grant (no nn?)

Theodore (nn Theo)

Originally Theodore was our favorite, but it has fallen to the bottom of our short list. I still haven't given up on it though. I think Abram is my current fave, and DH likes Grant the best. My hesitation with it is no nickname and for some reason, the fact that it's just one syllable kinda bugs me. Our other kids have three syllable names, so just one in combination with theirs sounds funny to me.

Thoughts/opinions? Or even suggestions based on our style?

  • From your list- Grant.  I like names that are already short but I see you point about the other children with more syllables.

I like Theodore the best, but I am not crazy about the nickname Theo. Grant is the next best for me. I really don't like Abram.

I really like Abram, but I don't care for Abe at all.  I'd use Abra or Bram if I shortened that already short name at all.

    Good luck!

Yeah, I like the nn Bram too. Maybe nn don't matter as much as I think anyway, but my son's name doesn't have one that comes easily and I've always wished it did.

  • I like Grant the best but given the fact your other kids have 3 syllable names I can see your hesitation. In this case, I would go with Theodore. I'm not a fan of Abram.

  • I like Grant. Out LO's name is Isaac and also has no nn.  It does bother me sometimes not to have a nn for him.

What about Teddy as a nn for Theodore, at least while he is younger.

  • Love Grant, Theodore is just ok and Abram is NMS.

A nickname doesn't have to be a derivative of the child's name, you'll find something that comes very naturally to call him when he's here.

  • I like Theodore the best, but I also love Abram.

Grant is just NMS, but it is a good name! I too have an issue with most one syllable names. It kind of feels incomplete or too plain or something.

  • I like Grant - don't worry about it not matching the rest of the siblings - they will not be grouped together forever (not even for a long time, in the grand scheme of things).

I know Abram is growing in popularity, but it seems like a name that could easily cause a lot of teasing.

  • I like Grant...

No nn doesn't bother me... people find nicknames based on LN or other things anyway.  I know my school nickname growing up was derived from my LN.  My nn at home had nothing to do with any name.  My parents thought for sure they would call my sister by her intended nn... but never did.. they always called her by her full name or some other nn b/c the shortened version just didn't fit.  There are lots of ways nn's come about so I worry about those less when picking.

  • Abram is very amish to me sorry

Grant is a nice strong name

Theodore I have an uncle with this name and his nn is Teddy or Ted.  Although, he is still picked on becuase of the Theodore.  He and his brothers are all 60+yrs old and they still tease him because of his name.  They all call him a sissy and things like that because of his name.  Just giving you an example

Your uncles sound like offensive a-holes. I think this is more a reflection on your immature uncles than the name Theodore.

  • All three names are great!  Like you, I tend to like siblings' names to be roughly similar in number of syllables.  If I had two kids with three syllable names, I'd probably be considering two- and three-syllable names for the third kid, and I might rule out one syllable names completely.  It's a silly rule, really.  When you're saying all three names together, having the last one be only one syllable does lend a nice feeling of finality (e.g., Oliver, Serena, and Grant).  But I'd still probably tend to pick Oliver, Serena, and Theodore or whatnot.

I'd love to hear what your older kids' names are (since that would give me a better idea of your style).  I love both Abram and Theodore, and I'm not sure I could pick between them without knowing either sibling names, or what the last name sounds like, or what middle name you've chosen (if you've chosen one yet).

Other boys' names you might like:

Simon, Elliot, Gideon, Asher, Frederick, Edmund, Leland, Miles/Milo, Calvin, Desmond, Arthur, Ephraim, Julius, August

Have you tried the baby naming tool at www.nymbler.com ?  You put in names you already like, and it suggests others to you in the same style.  I've found it to be a lot of fun.

  • Grant is my favorite. It's a great name that definitely can stand alone. But I do get your concern if your other kids have multiple syllable names. If it bugs you that much, Theodore is a very strong name and I love Theo.

DS is Julian and DD is Evelyn. Our last name is 2 syllables, starts with an F and ends in -er. (No, not Focker!) :)

Middle name options are family names: Mitchell or Donald.
