2nd Trimester

It's policy ?!?! Really ?!?! (Maybe TMI)

So we did the whole tour thing with our hospital and got to ask all the annoying questions that the nurses hear 50 times a day. So DH and I are getting ready to leave and the nurse says "Oh and don't forget to shave down there -- it's policy and if you don't we will have to for you to keep the docs happy" Since when is that a requirement of delivery?

1) "No food allowed, only ice chips and an IV"

2) "We typically give an epi when you hit 4cm"

3) "Oh, and No hair allowed in your private area so as not to piss off the doctor"

  • I've heard a lot of places do that, it makes things easier to see.
  • LMAO.

Careful - you don't want a pissy doc delivering your baby!?

  • Um that seems crazy to me - who are they to dictate your pubic hair?!

And if a nurse came at me with a razor while I was in labor I would probably kick her.  Hello - can we focus on the things that really matter here?!

    So stupid!

  • one more thing...HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO SEE IT TO SHAVE IT?
Baby Birthday Ticker TickerBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Its bad enough there are like 10 people staring down there, but now they are going to shave it for you too?

  • That sounds ridiculous.  If you don't want it done, it's your body refuse.  I would also ask to see the policy in writting.  It may just be one of the unwritten "rules" that all the nurses think is policy.

  • Oh my gosh, that's insane!  The last thing you should have to worry about is having a hair-free pubic area!
  • my doctor said they don't do that anymore because if they nick you it can get infected. ewwwww.
  • I think I'm going to go to that hospital...pretend to be in labor so they can shave for me. It's just too much work now and I'm not going to get waxed and have to have the poor lady who stared at my vag help me up.

and i hated the no food rule when i was in the hospital having dd. i was in labor for 3 weeks and at one point i broke down crying out of starvation and they actually let me leave (with all the tubes and such in my arms) to go get whatever I wanted to eat lol

  • I had an emergency C/S with DS and the nurses DRY SHAVED me.  Not fun.  I am getting the area where my incisons are waxed this time around.

Hmmm that is a thought ... so crying wolf could actually save me $50 on getting a wax. LOL

  • wow, really? I am an L&D nurse and we ONLY shave for sections at my hospital, and only about the top 1" (where the incision will be).
But we also allow our pts to have clear liquids (this includes jello, popsicles, hard candies...), and don't suggest epidurals.  Not even all of our pts get IVs.....

I'm so sorry your hospital is like this :(

    BFP #1: m/c at 8 weeks; BFP #2: DD born 6/9/09; BFP #3 m/c at 5 weeks; BFP #4 m/c at 8 weeks, D&E; BFP #5 DS born 8/12/12
  • That's crazy talk. I thought they had generally stopped shaving in L&D because of the risk of infection.
  • my legs just crossed at the thought of dry shaving. UGH.
  • I've heard that the shaving is unecessary but a lot of hospitals and docs still practice this old school thing of shaving the pubic area.  Although I'll be going nice and neat down there I don't want to scare anyone with the jungle that my lady area can become if I don't tame it, LOL.

  • Maybe you should let the girls on 1st Tri know about this.  They occassionally wonder if they should start letting things grow out down there so their doc's don't think they're sluts.  ;)

  • Requiring a shave is really old school.  I'd think about finding a new hospital.  If they're that old-fashioned, how up to date is their medicine?

  • OMG.  I turn red in the cheeks just thinking of what my OB must think of the patchwork quilt I probably have going on down there from random shaving.

I'd die if it was some sort of requirement.  If it is, they really should have a waxing person on staff to handle that.  IV...check.  Epidural....check.  Brazilian....check.

Seriously....I'd purposely not shave that area for the rest of the time and show up hairy as hell.  Everywhere, including pits.

    I almost peed myself!!  LOL

I asked DH if he'd shave me before labor if I can't see it and he said you know if I do it I'll shave my name into it, haha.

  • That is really strange.  My friend who just had a baby told me not to shave before going to the hospital.  Apparently she did just before leaving for the hospital and after delivery she developed a terrible rash/inflamation in that area.
  • You ladies are toooooo funny! I might take you up on some of your suggestions if I can stand it. Lucky for them, I can't stand the feeling of hair down there anyway so I am so OCD when it comes to shaving. I even made up a contract with DH that once I hit 30 weeks he has to shave me every week, once a week, and then again the day before they induce me. He's such a sweetie!

Where in South FL? What hospital? That would be too much if it was the same hospital

  • That's so weird. Dh used to watch deliveries at our hospitals for school and he said he's never, ever seen a woman totally shaven down there while giving birth. They only shave for a c-section at our hospitals.

He said he can't think of any reason that hair would keep a doc from seeing what he's supposed to see, unless someone has some strange anomaly that causes them to grow hair where it doesn't normally grow! Surprise

Speaking of crotcha-art, it would be pretty entertaining to have DH shave some inappropriate message down there for the shave-requiring doc...

  • That is pretty ridiculous. I'd say, "fine, shave it for me" since I sure as hell can't.?
  • My hospital said the same thing but don't shave yourself less than a week before your EDD because if you nick yourself you have a chance of getting an infection during delivery. They do it with special blades that don't cut you.
  • I can understand for a c/s around the incision location but really, you'd have to be hairy as heck to miss a baby crowning out of your va-jay-jay.  I mean it's not like you grow hair on your perenium.  Crazy!  I've had 2 kids & no one has ever said a word...I keep things trimmed very short but I don't shave (I get bad razor bumps) nor do I wax (ouch)...when I get very huge tummy...my DH will do it for me...what can I say, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I was just thinking this!  What kind of people do they have patronizing that hospital?  How long is their pubic hair??

I'm getting a horrible vision of a doctor with goggles and a weedwhacker.

OMG, this is the best mental image yet. LMAO

  • Screw that - seriously. Hasn't your doctor been looking at it throughout your entire pregnancy? You can't tell me he isn't use to it by now.

I think it's the nurses who want it shaved, probably makes it easier to clean the blood off.

  • That is the most ridiculous policy I have heard of!

Don't worry hun -- you're in the clear! I'm in Boynton Beach or Boca Raton now that I am thinking of changing hospitals. I am actually going to go to the other hospital and ask if they have a policy like this. If not it's Hello new home!!!

    Wink

  • HAHAHAa my DH would shave his initials in it too!!!
