Amoxicillin 2 Questions

DD is on amoxicillin for a throat infection and has developed some mild diarrhea and diaper rash. Has anyone experienced this? Would a probiotic would help with easing her stomach upset?

Also before she came down with the infection and was put on antibiotics she had a small patch of excema  on her side. It was very dry, red and not raised. Since she has been on amox, the excema has become a little bigger and on her other side as well and behind a knee. Is this normal for an antibiotic? They are not hives or welts because she has had it for a while, its just a little bigger and it doesn't seem to bother her at all. I think I may take her in to have a look at if but I thought I might get some insight here too.

TIA!

Re: Amoxicillin 2 Questions

  • Lo has been on amoxicillin twice for ear infections, one at 6 and 9 months.  Both times he had diarrhea.  The first time he got a diaper rash, the second time a full body rash.  The nurse at peds said it was all normal.  She also said I could give him some pedialite if I thought he wasn't drinking enough.

He also has excema, but besides the all over rash, I never noticed a difference when on amox.  The texture of his excema spots never changed.

Good luck!  If in doubt, call the nurse line.

  • Antiobiotics totally destroy the natural balance of bacteria in your body, and can definitely cause rashes and tummy upset. Probiotics should help - and if your baby is old enough give plain yogurt as well.

  • we did daily yogurt and probiotic melts while dosing...and were lucky enough to avoid the runs and rashes.
