My husband and I are going to paint the room that will be the nursery and get it ready so whenever we're picked we'll be ready to go. I plan on adding pops of pink or blue depending on if we get a boy or girl. but for now making everything bnuetral with blues, greens, and yellows. Just curious as to what you guys did about a nursery, and what are the must haves that I should think about getting before a baby comes? Thanks!
Re: nursey, what are the must haves?
It's so personal. I'll tell you what *I* think are the basics, and what we ended up doing. Take it all with a grain of salt and make your own list.
Must haves:
Crib
Changing table
Clothing/diaper storage
What we did was to set up our sitting room off our MBR as a nursery for the first 5 months. We had a crib (some people prefer a bassinet, PnP, cosleeping, etc.), a hutch we converted into a changing table/clothing and diaper storage combo, a small fridge for premixed bottles at night, and a bottle warmer. That was it.
At 5 months we moved DD across the hall. There she also had bookcases for toy and book storage, a closet for clothing storage, and a big chair for us to read to her or feed her.
I highly recommend a book like Baby Bargains. They'll give you everything from a bare bones list to all the extras you may want to splurge on.
Some people really go nuts with a nursery, including a them and coordinating bedding, drapes, rugs, etc. If you want to do that more power to you!
We set up a neutral nursery also. We had a crib with bedding, monitor, and a glider. We got our changing pad and cover at a shower when she was about 4-5 weeks old. We had a bookcase that we put that on.
We borrowed a bouncy seat and a bassinet from my SIL, not really using the bassinet much. Everything else we got at our shower when DD was about 2 weeks old.
In DD's room we have a dresser/changing table, crib, rocking chair (i'm going to replace it with a glider. Love gliders), video monitor (We used the Angel Care breathing monitor- as a paranoid FTM I would not of been able to sleep without it), sound machine, and a night light (we have the turtle with the stars that project on the ceiling. She slept in a Swaddle Me infant wrap until she could roll over and then she used sleep sacks. On the dresser I had a small cloth storage cube that held a few diapers and wipes so they were easily accessible. We had a small trash can with a lid for dirty diapers (until she was 3 months old and we switched to cloth diapers). We never used a diaper Genie or another diaper trash can and we never had a stink problem.
I wish I had not wasted money on a crib set. I didn't feel comfortable with the cloth bumpers and you can't use the big decorative blanket so all that left me with was a sheet, bed skirt, and the hanging diaper holder (which I never liked or used). Glad I got it at a consignment store and didn't waste too much money.
We did not have a nursery set up when DD was born and we did not even have the crib yet. We were planning to move so we didn't want to buy the crib till after the move and we did not have a nursery room until after the move. It wasn't a big deal anyway since she slept in a mini PNP crib beside our bed until she was about 5-6 months old. I loved that mini travel crib. I wanted her to sleep beside the bed in a bassinet, but we didn't want to spend money on something she could only use for a very short amount of time so we were glad to find the mini travel crib. It has an adjustable bassinet so it can be adjusted as the baby grows and then you can take out the bassinet part and just use it as a traditional PNP bed. It was great for trips too. This is the one we used https://www.amazon.com/GracoTravel-Lite-Crib-Stages-Notting/dp/B004IEBOVS.
That's what worked for us. Hope that helps.
After 5.5 years of loss, heartbreak, and empty arms, our dreams were fulfilled through the beautiful, selfless gift of adoption. We are amazingly blessed!

This. We've started picking up just little things as we wait and once our home study is approved we'll paint, set up a crib, etc. It gives us something fun and tangible to do now for our end result.
