Babies: 6 - 9 Months

something my SIL said...not sure about this

So, my SIL is quite opinionated and sometimes really says things that rub me the wrong way. The other day, DH was off work, so his sister brought his mom over to visit with DS and have lunch. During that time, she said that by 9 mo, all 3 of her kids were off the bottle completely per her pedi. Umm....what?? Does anyone else do this? Is this common?? I'd love to hear b/c I hadn't even really considered it.

  • huh.. all I have really heard from my ped about this is that I should be working on her drinking from a sippee cup. I think most peds want you to stop using a bottle by age 1? Maybe her ped was ultraconservative about it.

  • Maybe her children were sippy cup gods!  I know our pedi heavily encouraged sippy cups by the 6mth mark, but didn't care if the bottle was gone until my girls hit the 12mth mark.  I also tend to think that some people embellish when their kids did certain things at.

  • Yeah, both my SILS have been real great about saying things like that. My other SIL said her kids were drinking out of regular cups at 4 mo, albeit, not efficiently, but still....really?

  • No, that's not common. Up to a year kids should be getting most of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula, which is usually delivered through a bottle (the formula, that is). It can be given through a sippy cup, but it's not necessary.

After a year, the formula need decreases, so the bottle need decreases.

As for bottle vs. sippy cup, I think most of that is worry about dental issues. It's also easier to transition younger kids to a sippy than older. Trying to get a toddleroff a bottle can be tough.

The earliest I've ever heard of doctors recommending being weaned off a bottle is a year.

FWIW DS will be 9 months next week and we haven't even bought sippy cups yet.

  • Our pedi says 1 year too.
  • In my childcare books that my hospital gave me it indicates that most children should be able to drink from a cup at 9 months. But not that they need to be weaned from a bottle. I think the goal is for them to be able to do both.

This. We were told to start working on it, but not necessarily be off bottles completely just yet. It will happen when LO is ready.

  • My dd was off the bottle by a year around 11 months I started using sippy cups instead of bottles taking one away each week or so I kept the morning and night one then she refused it and I started milk age was done with formula by one

  • I don't think it's common practice... but nephew's pediatrician wants them to start reducing formula now and start going by the one-year guidelines more (he's 9 months) purely because it's best for his needs as an individual child.  He's close to 30 lbs.  He will still get some formula, so will not be entirely weaned.

I can't imagine it being commonplace though... from what I've read, at least until 1 is the guideline.

I cannot imagine weaning my LO anytime soon... (although she's breastfeed and I intend to keep BFing her for a fair while beyond one...)

EDIT:::  Okay, I just re-read and saw that all three were entirely off formula by 9 months.  No, that doesn't sound right to me.

  • If what she said is really true, well then good for her, but that has nothing to do with what you should do w/ your LO. Other moms will always try to compare or brag about what their babies did, but it's usually like 90% BS. Especially if it's something that sounds "too good to be true". Ignore all those ancedotes you'll hear about kids being really advanced and reaching milestones ahead of time. Focus on doing what's best for your LO.

  • I guess good for her kids??  It's unnecessary in my opinion and my answer to this kind of comment is "I'm not concerned/worried about it."

  • It's kind of a silly thing to brag about too, I mean who gives a crap.  As long as they're not 2 years old and drinking juice from a bottle in the crib, you're good.

We've started offering water in a sippy, so she can get the hang of it.  She loves it.  But, she will be taking BM bottles at daycare until 12 months, then we will wean her off of them until probably 14 months.  My kids don't really like the bottle, so it's not that big of a deal (or some great accomplishment) to wean off of it.

  • Huh? Sounds like she (or her pedi) is crazy. No, they just need to be off the bottle by 18 months. I started to really try weaning DD1 at 1 year.
