So, my SIL is quite opinionated and sometimes really says things that rub me the wrong way. The other day, DH was off work, so his sister brought his mom over to visit with DS and have lunch. During that time, she said that by 9 mo, all 3 of her kids were off the bottle completely per her pedi. Umm....what?? Does anyone else do this? Is this common?? I'd love to hear b/c I hadn't even really considered it.
Re: something my SIL said...not sure about this
No, that's not common. Up to a year kids should be getting most of their nutrition from breastmilk or formula, which is usually delivered through a bottle (the formula, that is). It can be given through a sippy cup, but it's not necessary.
After a year, the formula need decreases, so the bottle need decreases.
As for bottle vs. sippy cup, I think most of that is worry about dental issues. It's also easier to transition younger kids to a sippy than older. Trying to get a toddleroff a bottle can be tough.
The earliest I've ever heard of doctors recommending being weaned off a bottle is a year.
FWIW DS will be 9 months next week and we haven't even bought sippy cups yet.

This. We were told to start working on it, but not necessarily be off bottles completely just yet. It will happen when LO is ready.
I don't think it's common practice... but nephew's pediatrician wants them to start reducing formula now and start going by the one-year guidelines more (he's 9 months) purely because it's best for his needs as an individual child. He's close to 30 lbs. He will still get some formula, so will not be entirely weaned.
I can't imagine it being commonplace though... from what I've read, at least until 1 is the guideline.
I cannot imagine weaning my LO anytime soon... (although she's breastfeed and I intend to keep BFing her for a fair while beyond one...)
EDIT::: Okay, I just re-read and saw that all three were entirely off formula by 9 months. No, that doesn't sound right to me.
It's kind of a silly thing to brag about too, I mean who gives a crap. As long as they're not 2 years old and drinking juice from a bottle in the crib, you're good.
We've started offering water in a sippy, so she can get the hang of it. She loves it. But, she will be taking BM bottles at daycare until 12 months, then we will wean her off of them until probably 14 months. My kids don't really like the bottle, so it's not that big of a deal (or some great accomplishment) to wean off of it.
